Savannah homes with more land

Lamarville is where Savannah starts to spread out. While compact lawns and narrow streets reign in the downtown areas, Lamarville is made up of suburban subdivisions and rural farmland, which gives its residents more space and more privacy. It’s also a community that’s not on a lot of people’s radar. “That area is a real hidden gem. Not a lot of people know about it,” says Wynn Martin, a Realtor with Eighteen O'Two Realty, LLC who has been selling throughout the Savannah area for seven years. “It’s affordable; you can find a good deal on a home there, and there isn’t a lot of traffic because people aren’t driving through there to get somewhere else.”

Ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes line Lamarville's streets

Lamarville’s eastern side is suburban, with single-family homes on large, grassy lots. Most homes are ranch-style, built between the 1960s and early 2000s, with prices ranging from $179,000 for 1,000 square feet to $337,000 for 2,100 square feet. They feature garages and spacious front yards dotted with mature trees and shrubbery. The streets in this part of Lamarville are quiet and winding, and while sidewalks are scarce, there is plenty of room for an afternoon walk or for kids to ride their bikes. Lamarville’s western side is more rural. Homes sit far back on their sprawling lots, and the tree coverage is denser, giving residents even more privacy. The streets are two-lane and even quieter than in the subdivisions. Ranch-style homes are typical, as are manufactured homes and small Colonial Revival homes. Prices average about $250,000 for 1,200 square feet.

Locals get active at Lamarville Community Park

For fresh air and exercise, residents have two options within the neighborhood: Lamarville Community Park and West Lake Neighborhood Park. Both pocket parks offer green space, sizeable playgrounds with swings and slides, covered picnic pavilions that provide shade on hot, sunny days, and basketball courts, where residents come to shoot hoops.

Beach High School offers a variety of learning opportunities

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System encompasses the public schools in Lamarville, and kids usually start school at Haven Elementary School, then head to DeReene Middle School and Beach High School. Haven Elementary and DeReene Middle have a C-minus rating on Niche, and Beach High has a C rating. Beach High School serves about 900 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 15-to-1. It offers learning programs for students at all levels, including an accelerated program where students can earn college credit while still in high school and various special education programs for students with behavioral, learning and intellectual disabilities. Families considering private education for their children have multiple options nearby, including a Montessori school and several faith-based schools.

I-516 and I-16 are nearby

Interstate 516 runs along the community’s eastern side, which connects to Interstate 16. Both roadways travel west deeper into Georgia. Residents can also connect to Route 80 and take it to the beaches at Tybee Island, about 24 miles east.

Shopping and dining along Ogeechee Road

Berwick Marketplace off Ogeechee Road offers nearly everything locals need, like Kroger, where they pick up groceries and CVS and Walgreens for other essentials. They can also visit the service providers there, including Wells Fargo Bank, a dog groomer, a nail salon and a veterinarian. Berwick Marketplace also has restaurants, like Eggs Up Grill, a sunny breakfast and lunch spot and Patrón Mexican Bar & Grill, a go-to for traditional Mexican dishes like burritos, fajitas and quesadillas.

Important to know

Lamarville is just north of Hunter Army Airfield, home to about 5,500 soldiers, airmen, coast guardsmen and Marines. But those worried about noise from airplanes taking off and landing shouldn’t be concerned with Lamarville’s proximity to the base. “The flight path doesn’t go over the homes, it goes over the marsh,” Martin says.
