A ‘forever’ neighborhood balancing convenience and nature
In Mayfair, shady walks to the little free library at the end of the block are daily occurrences. Kids walk to the neighborhood pool and neighbors wave at each other from their driveways. This warm and welcoming vibe is a way of life in an active community that lives between the buzz of Oglethorpe Mall and the serenity of Lake Mayer. “When you drive in, you’re greeted by these big live oaks with Spanish moss. There are always people walking around,” says Rebecca Wayman, Realtor with Realty One Group Inclusion and a longtime resident of the Savannah area. “They have an optional pool membership, and when it comes to decorating for Christmas and Halloween, it’s a festive neighborhood.” Mayfair’s draw comes from a combination of suburban comfort, commercial convenience and proximity to nature, making it an attractive community for all ages. “This is definitely more of a ‘forever’ type neighborhood,” Wayman says. “It’s one of my top neighborhoods when I think of where I would want to live.”

Walk to the pool or Lake Mayer Park
Mayfair hugs the border of Lake Mayer Park, one of southside Savannah’s most popular recreation centers, putting residents within walking distance of tennis and pickleball courts, a playground and a skatepark. Local anglers can cast a line from the park’s scenic pier while remote-control car enthusiasts test their skills on a lighted dirt raceway. The possibility of alligators keeps swimmers out of the lake, but there’s plenty of room at the members-only neighborhood pool. “They have one of the few high dives that are still left in the area,” Wayman says. Residents can also sign their kids up for the local swim team, which won the Coastal Swim League title in 2015. Swimmers will find even more opportunities at the Chatham County Aquatic Center, while young athletes meet for games at the Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex. For gardeners, the Savannah Botanical Gardens provides a relaxing and educational experience. Nearby Bacon Park is beloved for its 27-hole golf course, originally designed in 1926 by famed golf architect Donald Ross.

Ranch-style homes with spacious, shaded lawns
Like many southside Savannah communities, Mayfair predominantly features brick ranch-style homes built from the 1950s to the 1970s, with a few midcentury modern builds sprinkled in. Buyers will also find the occasional split-level or raised ranch hidden behind moss-covered live oak branches. Although there are some renovations, many of the homes are original and are still in great condition, which Wayman attributes to dedicated homeowners. “When you live in a home for a long time, you take care of it differently,” she says. Homes are set back from the street, creating neat, shaded front yards with plenty of room for landscaping. The neighborhood doesn’t have sidewalks, and there aren’t many garages, meaning walkers may need to navigate around cars parked on the street. Homes generally offer three or four bedrooms and about 2,000 square feet and range in price from about $400,000 to $600,000.

With over 100 storefronts, Oglethorpe Mall is southside Savannah’s largest indoor shopping center. It features everything from department stores like Macy’s to boutiques like Torrid. Just 2 miles away, the mall and its surrounding retailers, which include Kohl’s, Best Buy, Kroger and Burlington, provide convenient shopping and grocery options for Mayfair residents. The mall is also known for its international food court, where diners can sample everything from Greek to Japanese cuisine. Carey Hilliard’s Restaurant has served the community from its location on Waters Avenue since 1971, doling out fresh seafood in a wood-accented diner. For a quick meal of tacos and margaritas, neighbors can walk to La Canasta Taqueria y Panaderia.
