An artsy urban village in Savannah

With deep roots as a historically Black neighborhood, Metropolitan has grown into an urban village with an artistic heart and an endless menu. “What we’re seeing over there is that a younger generation of entrepreneurs is going in and opening up little shops, little taverns and little places, and it’s becoming a really hip area,” says Joel Solomon, a Realtor with Century 21 who has been selling homes in the area since the late 2000s. Locally owned restaurants and boutiques in the Starland District draw visitors from all over the city, while vivid Victorian architecture helps maintain the neighborhood’s historic charm. Like many neighborhoods near downtown Savannah, Metropolitan has benefited from the city’s revitalization efforts, including the restoration of historic homes and the addition of colorful murals painted by students from the nearby Savannah College of Art and Design. “It’s historic, but it has a fresh breath of life with modern touches and all the art,” says Kayla Smith of Realty One Group Inclusion, who was born and raised in nearby Beaufort, S.C.. Over the years, the college’s growing presence has drastically changed the demographics, as students and faculty have filled up renovated properties. As gentrification sweeps westward -- the neighborhood borders the historically Black Cuyler-Brownsville community -- the challenge is to embrace the future without erasing the past.

Victorian architecture highlights an eclectic mix of historic homes

The neighborhood's housing options are as diverse as its residents. Victorian-style rowhomes with covered front porches are common, and many have been converted into duplexes to accommodate the growing population of SCAD students. Because of the vast differences in age and condition -- some of the housing dates to the late 19th century -- prices can vary greatly, from around $300,000 for a single-story, Victorian-influenced cottage to as much as $900,000 for an extensively renovated multi-level Colonial. Original brick streets are a charming complement to an eclectic mix of historic housing. Amid the architectural diversity, Queen Annes manage to stand out, with conical shapes gracing their colorful, decorative facades and large porches welcoming visitors. Condos can be found starting in the low $300,000s.

Beach High School features a new auditorium

Students may attend Gadsden Elementary and DeRenne Middle schools, both rated C-minus by Niche. C-rated Beach High features a state-of-the-art auditorium that hosts performances of its popular drama program. Hodge Elementary is a C-rated school that serves a portion of the neighborhood. Savannah College of Art & Design is located within a mile.

Nearby Forsyth Park is a historic space that hosts year-round events

Wells Park is a convenient community green space on the west side of the neighborhood. Residents also enjoy proximity to Forsyth Park, which is located just blocks away. Anchored by its iconic fountain and known for its gardens, the picturesque park is a downtown Savannah landmark that hosts an array of citywide events. “The Savannah Philharmonic holds concerts there, SCAD has its Sidewalk Art Festival there, and there’s also a farmer’s market on the weekends that brings a lot of vendors,” says Smith of the highlights. “Even yoga studios will hold classes in the park.” Other notable events include the Juneteenth Fine Arts Festival, the Savannah Jazz Festival and the Patriot Day 5K Memorial Run. Within the neighborhood, locals come together for monthly events like First Fridays in the Starland District, a celebration of art and culture along Bull Street. The annual Art on Bull block party also draws a crowd and helps raise funds for ARTS Southeast, a local nonprofit.

Buses, main thoroughfares provide convenient transportation

Residents can catch the bus throughout the neighborhood to commute for work or play. The Chatham Area Transit Authority’s main station is located downtown. Residents also can hop on the ferry at the downtown waterfront. Interstates 16 and 516 are located just west of the neighborhood. Victory Drive, which forms the neighborhood's southern edge, provides convenient travel to the popular beaches on Tybee Island less than 20 miles away.

From trendy Starland eateries to established soul food stops

Although there is a Kroger within walking distance, local eateries and shops are the stars of the show. Hand-painted signage marks the start of the Starland District, which got its name from the original Starland Dairy on Bull Street. “The Starland District has become really hot over the last five or six years,” Solomon says, noting that following revitalization efforts, the district transformed into a colorful cultural destination, with everything from nostalgic coffee shops like Back in the Day Bakery to the buzzy outdoor Starland Yard Food Truck Park. “The gourmet wave has hit Savannah,” says Edward Barr, a Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal and resident of the city's Parkside neighborhood. “Starland Yard is funky and trendy. There’s an outdoor bar and yard games. It’s just a fun place to go.” Other top options include The Vault, an Asian-fusion eatery in a converted bank building, and Elizabeth's on 37th, an upscale Southern restaurant in a 19th-century mansion. Wormhole Neighborhood Pub is a popular stop for comfort food, drinks and live music. Starland Strange and Vintage Vortex are featured destinations among Starland's boutique shops. Other notable restaurants in the area include Simple Soul Café, a no-frills Southern eatery on Montgomery Street, which used to house an array of Black-owned businesses but is now awaiting the revitalization that has given the neighborhood's east side a new look. A block away on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is Shabazz Seafood, where customers can grab carry-out from the counter-serve window of a bright yellow building, as they’ve been doing for the last 34 years. The Savannah institution was even featured on the Netflix show “Fresh, Fried and Crispy” in 2021.
