Suburban Neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia

Oakdale’s cul-de-sacs keep traffic to a minimum
Few neighborhoods in Savannah have more cul-de-sacs than Oakdale. The lengthy streets stretch toward the center of the community but rarely cross the creek in the middle, meaning through traffic is nearly non-existent here. A few of the cul-de-sacs are connected by paved walking paths or bridges, so neighbors can still walk from one end of the community to the other despite a lack of sidewalks. On the way, they’ll pass an eclectic mix of brick ranch-style homes, colonial builds and the occasional raised ranch or split level shaded by mature willow and oak trees laced with Spanish moss. Three- and four-bedroom homes under 2,000 square feet can range between $330,000 and $500,000, while larger properties up to 3,500 square feet are more likely to fall in the $500,000 to $800,000 range. But that’s still less expensive than neighboring communities like Kensington Park, and there are no homeowners association fees, Baggett says. Two-story condos and townhouses occupy the neighborhood’s southwestern corner, with units selling between $200,000 and $400,000.Recreation lives at the Habersham YMCA and local sports complexes
Between the Jenkins Athletic Club and the Habersham YMCA, residents have plenty of opportunities for indoor recreation. Youth sports programs are a highlight of both locations, but an outdoor pool and playground are only found at the YMCA. There’s no green thumb required to enjoy an afternoon at the Savannah Botanical Gardens, a 10-acre expanse with a historic house, hundreds of plant varieties and seasonal events. Golfers enjoy the proximity to Bacon Park’s golf course, while athletes have their pick of activities between the Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex, the Ambuc Park baseball fields and the Chatham County Aquatic Center. Lake Mayer Park is also just a few miles away, offering space for skateboarders to practice new tricks while fishers cast a line into the lake.Students can walk to Heard Elementary
As part of Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, students may attend Heard Elementary, which receives a grade of B-minus from Niche. The school sits in the middle of the neighborhood, and Baggett says traffic can sometimes be an issue in the mornings and afternoons. But it also means residents have the option of walking their kids to campus. After attending Myers Middle, which scores a C-minus, students can move on to B-plus-rated Jenkins High, which offers a competitive School of Engineering program. Private schools are also available nearby, including the A-rated, all-male Benedictine Military School and the K-8 Hancock Day School.Citywide celebrations at Lake Mayer Park and Savannah Botanical Gardens
Oakdale residents can celebrate the city during annual events such as the Savannah Camellia Festival, which takes place in February at nearby Lake Mayer Park. The Savannah Botanical Gardens also organizes events throughout the year, including a popular holiday light show. For even more excitement, neighbors can head to historic downtown Savannah for local traditions such as the Savannah Jazz Festival or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.Catch a CAT bus or hop on Truman Parkway
Paved walkways may provide an easy route for walkers between cul-de-sacs, but those looking to venture beyond the residential streets usually rely on cars. Abercorn isn’t the most pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare, although it is a convenient spot for commuters to catch a Chatham Area Transit bus. Historic downtown Savannah is about an 8-mile drive north, accessible via both Abercorn Street and Truman Parkway. Nearby Interstate 516 connects drivers to Interstate 16, which leads west toward Macon.Abercorn Street is a commercial hub
Oakdale is located next to southside Savannah’s busiest commercial district. Casual restaurants such as Sweet Potatoes Kitchen, specializing in Southern food, intermix with medical offices off Stephenson Avenue. Classic chains such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panda Express occupy storefronts beside major retailers along Abercorn Street, like Best Buy and Kohl’s. Although they’re known for their flavorful, homestyle barbecue, BowTie Barbecue Co. stands out for its impressive collection of whiskey, which includes more than 120 different blends. Ben’s Neighborhood Grill & Tap has BowTie beat with more than 150 beers and daily happy hour specials. Folks can sample homemade treats at the flagship location of Byrd’s Famous Cookies, a name that’s helped satiate Savannah’s sweet tooth since the 1920s. And then there’s Oglethorpe Mall, a massive indoor shopping center with a massive food court and more than 100 storefronts offering everything from department store goods to boutique jewelry to electronics. For groceries, shoppers can visit Kroger, Publix or The Fresh Market.
