Schererville is at the ‘Crossroads’
The Northwest Indiana town of Schererville is often called the “Crossroads of the Nation.” It dates to long before the town's founding in 1866, when American settlers migrating west converged at this point along the way. Today, it’s where U.S. Highway 41, which spans from Michigan to Florida, and U.S. Highway 30, going from New Jersey to Oregon, intersect. “Schererville is growing a bit in terms of the population,” says Steven Cleveland, a broker associate with @properties. “There’s not much new construction happening here - that’s happening more in communities surrounding Schererville.” Schererville is 35 miles southeast of downtown Chicago, with a mix of people who work in Northwest Indiana and those who commute to Chicago.

Tax advantage in Indiana
Schererville is close to the Illinois border, and one of the advantages is tax breaks for living in Indiana. “The biggest driving factor is lower property taxes, and we don’t have a grocery tax,” Cleveland says. “Many people come from Illinois to shop for groceries.” The median single-family house price is $370,000, which is slightly lower than the national median, according to the National Association of Realtors. It’s higher than Dyer, at $340,000, the nearest community to the west. “There’s a lot of diversity in housing,” says Nancy Frigo, a broker at Coldwell Banker Realty. “It’s a good mix of all types regarding affordability and style.” Most of the newer and custom-built homes are in the Hartsdale neighborhood west of downtown, where some are over $1 million. Townhouses range from $175,000 to $450,000, while condos are priced from $150,000 to $350,000.
According to FBI statistics, the rate of violent crime incidents over the past five years was way below the national and state averages. Property crimes were around the state and national average for the same period. Specifically, instances of theft were above the national average, according to Niche.

Most of Schererville's retail and restaurant options center around Joliet Road and Indianapolis Boulevard, where Routes 30 and 41 intersect. Within a two-mile radius are several shopping centers, chains and independent restaurants. East of that intersection is a turnoff on West Joliet Street to get to the small downtown area, where the town administration building, the courthouse, a few local restaurants and quaint shops are located.

Redar Park hosts Schererville Fest
Two main summer festivals occur in a couple of the town’s parks. Redar Park is where the five-day Schererville Fest takes place. The celebration runs from Wednesday through Sunday in early June, and features live music, food trucks, carnival rides and a beer garden. At other times of the year, the 9-acre facility has a softball field, two basketball courts, a place to play sand volleyball and a playground. To get a jump on the 4th of July festivities, Rohrman Park has an annual fireworks show in late June. The free event has food vendors and bounce houses. The park spans over 40 acres and has five soccer fields, lighted baseball and softball diamonds and a one-mile paved trail. The Pennsy Greenway goes by Rohrman Park. It’s a walking and biking trail that extends to Calumet City, Illinois, 12 miles away. Another summer tradition in town is the Schererville Corn Roast, held during the St. Michael Festival at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.

Located on the east side of Schererville, New Elliott is less populated than other Schererville communities, but maintains the same suburban charm. “New Elliot is really just a part of Schererville, almost like a subdivision. It’s between two towns, Schererville and Merrillville, but people in New Elliot use the same amenities as people in Schererville,” says Felicitas Lara, Schererville local and broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty. “It’s a central location. There’s easy access to shopping and entertainment, and it’s close to Illinois as well.”
Homes built in the 1970s and 80s feature bi-level, split-level and ranch styles starting around $300,000. New Elliot also has homes built within the last 20 years, more frequently two-story, new traditional homes with private driveways and prominent two-car garages. These homes typically start around $400,000. Homes in New Elliot generally sit lots set back from the street with freshly cut green lawns and simple but well-manicured landscaping.
Rohrman Park offers 41 acres of green space in New Elliot. It has softball, baseball and soccer fields, updated playground equipment and a picnic shelter. Peter G Redar Memorial Park is another popular spot for families, with a playground, basketball courts and sand volleyball court. Both parks connect to the Pennsy Greenway Trail, a paved trailway across Schererville that will be over 6 miles long upon completion. For more outdoor recreation, locals can reel in a catfish at Fish a While Lakes or enjoy views of the wetlands on the Turkey Creek Trail in the Ivan Gatlin Nature Preserve.
“They hold a lot of events at Redar Park,” Lara says. This includes Schererville Fest in June, a celebration of the town with carnival rides, musical performances, food and beer vendors, and games. Redar Park has also hosted free outdoor concerts from the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. Rohrman Park also hosts events, with its Fourth of July festival featuring a beer garden, craft vendors and food as well as fireworks.
“There’s grocery shopping and shops on Main Street in Schererville. There’s a lot of fast-food restaurants in the area too, and more casual spots to eat,” Lara says. Town Square Shopping Center at the intersection of Main Street and Indianapolis Boulevard has big box stores like Target, Whole Foods and Office Depot, and chain restaurants on Main Street include Panera Bread, Steak’n Shake and LongHorn Steakhouse. For more casual dining, Toast & Jam serves American breakfast classics like omelets, breakfast skillets and French toast.
