From cottages to beachfront homes in Humarock
Though some Humarock homes date back to the 1920s, many have been converted or rebuilt, Giovanucci says. “No matter where you are, you’re in the flood zone.” There are a few two-bedroom bungalows and cedar-shingled Nantucket-style homes on inland streets, but residences along the water are usually newer. They have been elevated and reinforced to withstand storms and water. Real estate offerings are limited, as homes often pass from generation to generation. A late 1900s renovated beach cottage with around 1,000 square feet might list between $700,000 and just under $1 million. Beachfront and riverfront homes often have more square footage and generally sell between $1 million and $2.5 million. “If something really special comes up, it might sell for about $3 million,” Giovanucci says.Humarock recreation and "the Spit"
Humarock Beach is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. There are lifeguards on duty seasonally, and sometimes seals visit the beach in the summer. “Many people spend their time on ‘the spit’ off Third Cliff in Scituate,” Giovanucci says. “They dock up and spend the day at the beach. People also take their boats out in the river or go kayaking.” Private docks and marinas line the South River, which connects to the Atlantic Ocean via New Inlet. At the north end of the peninsula is Fourth Cliff, a campground reserved for military families. At the 225-acre Mass Audubon's North River Wildlife Sanctuary, about 4 miles northwest of Humarock, hikers can watch for hawks and woodpeckers along the relatively flat loop trails. There is also a quarter-mile accessible trail, which passes through a fern glen.Kids can attend Scituate Public Schools
Scituate Public Schools serve the Humarock community. Kids may start at Jenkins Elementary School, rated A-minus by Niche, before transitioning to Lester J. Gates Middle School, which earns an A rating. Students may then attend B-plus-rated Scituate High School, which offers a variety of athletics programs, including skiing in the winter and ultimate Frisbee in the spring. The Horribles Parade and the third of July
Humarock residents gather for several holidays each year, including Independence Day. “We celebrate the third of July more than the Fourth of July, with bonfires — they try to put a stop to those — and beautiful fireworks all up and down the beaches,” Giovanucci says. Another part of the festivities is Humaflock, where “people go down to one end of Humarock, depending on which way the tide is moving, and take their floats — they buy ones shaped like flamingos or dragons — and float down the river. I grew up here, and we didn’t have floats when we were kids. We just floated on our backs and had eels going in and out of our legs,” she says. On the Saturday before Labor Day, kids put on their creepiest costumes for the annual Horribles Parade, and they ride from one end of the village to the other. “There are a few bands and old-fashioned cars too. About 20 to 30 people get on a flatbed truck, and they go all out on the themes,” Giovanucci says. Another major celebration takes place around St. Patrick’s Day. Bagpipers come down from Boston, and they process across the bridge to the center of the village. There are activities for kids, performances by Irish dancers and the Voyage Irish Pub & Restaurant serves up a traditional Irish meal.Commuting from Humarock
From the center of Humarock, Boston is about 33 miles away by car. “Most people drive, but every corporate person that I know only has to go in to work one or two days per week,” Giovanucci says. “So many people are still remote.” Some residents travel around the area by boat, stopping in Scituate Harbor or docking in Boston for lunch. Commuters can also drive 6 miles to the Greenbush station in Scituate, where they can catch Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail trains into Boston’s South Station.Superior Lobster and the Voyage Irish Pub
There are a handful of small businesses in the village. Superior Lobster & Seafood, on Marshfield Avenue, sells live lobsters of all sizes, in addition to fresh-caught fish. “I go three times a week,” Giovanucci says. Beside it is Humming Rock Gifts, a souvenir shop where visitors often commemorate their trips to the village by posing in the wooden photo cutout boards out front. Across the street is the Voyage Irish Pub & Restaurant, a family-owned eatery serving Guinness Beef Stew Pot Pie and Scallops Risotto along with its pints. It’s often crowded in the evenings, as locals come to watch live music or sing karaoke. Monday is singo bingo night at the Voyage. Participants get a bingo card with song names, and everyone races to identify songs and fill their cards. In the mornings, people walk over the Sea Street Bridge for a sweet treat at Dockside Donuts. North River Beverage, also at the edge of the bridge, carries milk, bread and a few other essentials, but most shopping is in Marshfield or Scituate, around 6 miles from the center of Humarock.Homebuying considerations
Humarock’s location makes it vulnerable to storms and erosion. The town of Scituate has invested grant funds toward finding the best long-term solutions to protect the village. Homeowners are responsible for managing their own septic systems, which are inspected by the town’s board of health.
