Lone Mountain offers spacious homes in the desert north of Scottsdale

The name Lone Mountain gives the impression of seclusion and, this neighborhood, north of Scottsdale, delivers on that promise. It is a suburban expanse of custom-built homes in the high desert. Lot sizes are often over an acre, and home size here is significantly larger than the national average. Prospective buyers looking for a quiet escape from the city tend to find that here. “People choose it because they want to be near – but not in – north Scottsdale,” says Todd Stengel, broker and owner with Morgan Taylor Homes. “It’s also near Cave Creek, which is a big shopping and tourist destination.”

Sizeable lots with custom Southwestern homes

The desert lots in Lone Mountain are expansive, with custom homes on acreage dominating the selection. The median lot size is over an acre, and yards can feature everything from natural desert xeriscaping to miniature golf courses and private basketball courts. “Home styles out there are a bit of a mix,” Stengel says. “You’ll find a lot with Southwestern architectural flair, like stucco and Spanish tile roofs.” Pueblo-inspired Modern Traditional builds with flat roofs and square structures are also popular, as are more midcentury modern style homes. Prices usually range from around $800,000 to $2 million, varying based on square footage, acreage and build year. Some smaller homes in need of renovations can fetch prices of $500,000 to $750,000, while the largest houses can cost well over $3 million.

The CAP Index Crime Score in Lone Mountain is 1 out of 10; compared to the national average of 4.

Cave Creek schools earn A-minus grades across the board

Students in Lone Mountain attend schools in the Cave Creek Unified School District, which scores an overall B-plus grade from Niche. The district offers open enrollment, magnet opportunities and statewide out-of-district transfers, with applications usually determined by lottery or on capacity. Lone Mountain Elementary School receives an A-minus. Sonoran Trails Middle and Cactus Shadows High both earn A-minuses as well. Cactus Trails High partners with the nearby Paradise Valley Community College to offer students the opportunity to earn early college credit.

Public parks are available in nearby communities

The closest public parks near Lone Mountain are in neighboring communities. Asher Hills Park offers pickleball courts and a small shaded playground, while Desert Willow Park has open fields and basketball courts. Residents can often enjoy outdoor recreation on their own property. “They have a lot of dirt roads out there on their 1-acre lots,” Stengel says. “People take golf carts and side-by-sides out on them pretty frequently.”

Everyday essentials are nearby in Cave Creek and Scottsdale

Residents can shop for groceries and daily household necessities on either side of the community. To the west in Cave Creek, there is a Safeway and a Fry’s, while to the east the Summit at Scottsdale shopping center hosts a Safeway and a Target. Nearby restaurants include casual Italian spot, Uncle Louie The Restaurant, and Brisam’s Grill, Bar and Patio, a lively American eatery.

Surface streets connect Lone Mountain to the city and beyond

Cave Creek Road is the closest major highway to Lone Mountain, connecting the community southwest to Scottsdale. There are no bus stops in the neighborhood, so residents will need to rely on their cars to get around. “Either Cave Creek Road or Scottsdale Road are going to be the main commuter lanes,” Stengel says. Scottsdale Road is the quickest way to stores like Costco and Home Depot, while Cave Creek Road provides the most direct route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
