Scottsville is a quiet river town with charm and history
Before Thomas Jefferson made a name for himself as a Founding Father, his father, Peter Jefferson, was among the people who created a government in what is now known as Scottsville. Over a century has passed, but Scottsville has retained its natural beauty. The area spans across Albemarle and Fluvanna counties, with a downtown full of locally owned businesses and working farmland and forests surrounding the homes. “It has a small-town charm with the James River running right through it,” says Tom Miles, a Realtor at Miles Land and Homes associated with Re/Max Realty Specialist. “It’s got really good people, and it’s quaint and quiet. Scottsville hasn’t changed that much in the last 20 years or so. It’s just a great, beautiful place. It’s got everything — great restaurants, small shops, farmers market and beautiful parks. There are vast amounts of farmland that surround the town.”

Exploring parks and floating down the James River
Scottsville has Dorrier Park and Little League baseball fields downtown, but residents and out-of-town visitors usually explore outdoor destinations like Totier Creek Reservoir Park, known for its hiking and fishing spots. When the weather warms up, James River Reeling & Rafting becomes a booming place to rent kayaks or innertubes before heading out for a day on the water. The Canal Basin Square is the venue for the Fridays on the Canal summer concert series, held on the fourth Friday of every month from May through September.

Existing homes with a few new builds
Properties are often spread out from one another, buried in trees with long driveways that lead from the main road to the front door. Most homes have ranch-style or Craftsman designs and sell for $300,000 to $500,000, while farmhouses with sprawling lots might go for $500,000 to $800,000. Smaller homes that land in the $175,000 to $300,000 range may need some renovations. Some houses were built as recently as 2025, though Miles says the limited number of new homes is due to Scottsville’s infrastructure and proximity to the river. New construction may be infrequent, but that means the area keeps its laid-back lifestyle and more rustic scenery.

Downtown Scottsville's locally owned restaurants
Downtown Scottsville is full of businesses like bistros and boutiques. “Tavern on the James is really good,” Miles says. “They’ve been in business for over 20 years, and that’s almost unheard of for restaurants these days. Amici’s is an Italian restaurant downtown that’s excellent. Those two are less than a block from each other.” Residents usually grab groceries at the Food Lion in Scottsville Center. For more shopping and dining, Charlottesville's breweries, restaurants and stores are 30 minutes away.

The James River Batteau Festival brings visitors to town
The James River Batteau Festival happens every June. The event kicks off in Lynchburg, and participants boat down the water, stopping at river towns like Scottsville. “They’ve been doing that for 35 years,” Miles says. “I was a part of that back when it started in the early ‘80s. People build boats from scratch that are replicas of what they used to use to transport furs on the James River. They make a pit stop in Scottsville and then get back on the river the next morning.”
Past history of flooding
Scottsville has a long history of flooding, particularly up until 1975. Scottsville Presbyterian Church is one of many churches in town, but it has markings on the bricks to show how high flood waters reached. The town constructed a levee in 1985, and the flooding was mostly resolved. Areas around Mink Creek see standing water during torrential rain. Flood alerts go out via the Code Red Albemarle County and Fluvanna Emergency Alert systems.
