Cold canoeing and a Fun Run Race for the Cure
Sweeney’s Beach hosts multiple annual events, including RiverFest, which features a “Duck-A-Thon” race down the Lackawanna River, where locals bet on launched wooden ducks to win a river race. The festival also includes live music, educational exhibits and vendors. The ShiverFest has also been held at Sweeney’s Beach, where canoers and kayakers brave an almost 3-mile stretch on the Lackawanna River in the middle of snowy January. Recent construction has improved safety around the river as well, as “it really doesn’t flood like it used to,” Cognetti says. The Office 5K also runs through part of Pine Brook. The event is inspired by the show’s “Michael Scott’s Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race for the Cure.” Participants of all fitness levels come together, dress as their favorite characters, play quirky games and even have the chance to win a “Dundie Award.”

“There are small businesses in the area, but today it is primarily residential,” says John Cognetti, Realtor with Hinerfeld Commercial Real Estate and native of Scranton. Residents and visitors come to Cooper’s for seafood and The Office nostalgia, but other restaurants dot the Pine Brook map as well. Posh is a fine-dining bistro nearby, and Ipanema Grill serves authentic Brazilian cuisine a few miles across the river.
