Scranton suburb near convenient highway interchange

Situated on the edges of Scranton’s city limits is Providence, a residential suburb that offers relatively affordable single-family homes with convenient access to Downtown Scranton and surrounding Lackawanna County. This area also borders a major highway interchange and several retail outlets, including Viewmont Mall and the Dickson City Crossings shopping plaza. Students in Providence can attend academic institutions within the Scranton School District, which is rated C-plus by Niche. At the center of the neighborhood is the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County, an educational institution that uses experiential learning and guided instruction to prepare learners for higher education and career opportunities.

In this neighborhood, locals will find a diverse range of single-family homes situated in residential pockets that back up into small, wooded areas. Residences vary in architecture, but some of the more common styles include split-level and traditional homes with vinyl-paneled siding. Cozy bungalows and Cape Cod dwellings also dot the area. Many residences feature covered front porches and steep roofs with multiple gables; some properties also have paved driveways and garages. Most homes tend to range in price from about $90,000 to $160,000, although some updated three-bedroom residences can sell for well over $200,000.

Award-winning choir program at Scranton High School

Providence is served by the Scranton School District; young learners can attend public primary schools like Neil Armstrong Elementary, which is rated B. Students might then go to C-rated Northeast Scranton Intermediate and later feed into Scranton High School, a B-rated institution that ranked number three on Niche’s “Best Public High School in Lackawanna County” list. Scranton High School is also home to award-winning choirs that compete throughout the East Coast and have performed for radio shows, community celebrations and the Pennsylvania State Capitol.

Home to the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County

At the center of Providence is the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County, or CTCLC, a vocational institution that offers more than 20 programs, including cosmetology, health occupations, culinary arts and more. Students here engage in hands-on learning experiences that aim to prepare them for future career paths and higher education. The CTCLC also has a practical nursing program, which extends a 52-week course load over 15 months and offers students supervised clinical experience opportunities.

Local parks and nearby Montage Mountain

At the local Rockwell Park, residents can find a fenced-in baseball field and basketball court alongside a fully equipped playground and covered pavilion with picnic tables. Locals looking to take a dip in the pool can go to Weston Park, which offers an outdoor pool alongside a baseball field and playground area. Approximately 10 miles south, locals can find a mountain resort full of seasonal outdoor recreation: “Montage Mountain is popular for its skiing, summer concerts and water park,” says Colleen Weissman, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Preferred Properties who has more than 16 years of experience in real estate.

Neighborhood taverns and 1940s diners

About 2 miles south of the neighborhood along Providence Road is Glider Diner, a retro-style restaurant that’s been serving customers since the 1940s and is “famous for their roast beef and gravy – it’s delicious,” according to Weissman. Residents can also dine at Market Street Bar & Grill, a neighborhood tavern that serves pub food and craft beer. For groceries and household goods, locals can go to Dickson City Crossings, a shopping center with Target, Walmart and Home Depot. Just down the street is Viewmont Mall, where shoppers can find dozens of apparel and specialty stores.

Downtown Scranton hosts "The Office" 5K

There’s no shortage of events to attend in Downtown Scranton, situated roughly 4 miles south of the neighborhood. One such event is the annual Santa Parade, a wintertime ceremony that’s been celebrated since 1993 and features marching bands, parade floats and dance performances. Another popular event is The Office 5K, an annual springtime run themed after the hit television show “The Office,” famously set in Scranton.

Access to three major thoroughfares

A large highway interchange – which connects Interstate 81, the Scranton Carbondale Highway and U.S. Route 11 – borders Providence and gives commuters convenient access to the city and nearby boroughs. The County of Lackawanna Transit System, or COLTS, operates two fixed bus routes that travel through and have multiple stops in Providence: Route 54 to Dickson City has stops along North Main Avenue, and Route 43 connects Viewmont Mall and Downtown Scranton with stops on West Market Street. Residents looking to catch a flight can use I-81 for a 13-mile commute to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport.
