West Mountain offers privacy away from Scranton
West Mountain, as the name suggests, is a rural mountain neighborhood outside Scranton. Trees surround homes, giving residents a sense of privacy. “I cannot see my neighbor from my house but can still get to downtown Scranton in 5 minutes,” says Jamie Rillstone, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services who has worked in Scranton for 20 years and lived in West Mountain for 14. Residents travel the 4 miles into Scranton for most shopping and dining, and students attend Scranton School District. Interstate 476 runs through the middle of the neighborhood and allows access to the rest of Pennsylvania.
Colonial influences with mountain views surrounded by trees
Manicured lawns stretching to the sidewalks break up what is otherwise a heavily forested area. Most yards have a clear view of the mountains and the seasonal changing of the leaves. Raised ranch-styles and new traditional homes with colonial influences, built in the late 20th century and early 2000s, sit among the trees. Closer to McDade Park, mid-20th-century minimal traditional homes with covered entrances are next to each other on narrow lots. Prices for a three-bedroom house tend to fall between $150,000 and $250,000, while four-bedrooms can cost between $300,000 and $400,000.

Viewmont Mall, a 5-mile drive, has several chain stores, including JCPenney, and restaurants like Dairy Queen and Applebee’s. Less than 1 mile from town is The Fresh Grocer, formerly Gerrity’s, where residents can pick up a few essentials. Additional shopping options include Walmart, about 4 miles away, and Lowe’s, which is around a 6-mile drive.

West Mountain residents celebrate with neighboring cities
Sitting about 6 miles between Clarks Summit and 4 miles from downtown Scranton, residents of West Mountain travel to either city for the many events that happen throughout the year. The ice festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024 with the theme “Jurassic Ice.”

Play and learn at McDade Park
McDade Park sits on 180 acres of former coal mining terrain. Amenities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a children’s fishing pond and open fields used for sledding in the winter. The Boundless Playground is a large structure with accessible slides, swings and areas for kids to climb. The path surrounding the playground features designated quiet zones and a butterfly garden. The park is home to the Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour, which takes people 300 feet underground to walk them through how people mined in the Industrial Revolution, and the Anthracite Heritage Museum, which teaches the history of hard coal mining and Pennsylvania immigrant culture. Also in the neighborhood is Fawnwood Golf Complex, which offers a mini golf course and a driving range for people to practice their swings.
