West Mountain
Colonial influences with mountain views surrounded by trees
Manicured lawns stretching to the sidewalks break up what is otherwise a heavily forested area. Most yards have a clear view of the mountains and the seasonal changing of the leaves. Raised ranch-styles and new traditional homes with colonial influences, built in the late 20th century and early 2000s, sit among the trees. Closer to McDade Park, mid-20th-century minimal traditional homes with covered entrances are next to each other on narrow lots. Prices for a three-bedroom house tend to fall between $150,000 and $250,000, while four-bedrooms can cost between $300,000 and $400,000.Breakfast, lunch and dessert are served
People can start their day at Rich’s Restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch, or get a sweet treat at Black Cat Bakery. Both Scranton and Clarks Summit have additional retail and dining options. Rillstone recommends the State Street Grill, which is about 6 miles away and has a diverse menu. Viewmont Mall, a 5-mile drive, has several chain stores, including JCPenney, and restaurants like Dairy Queen and Applebee’s. Less than 1 mile from town is The Fresh Grocer, formerly Gerrity’s, where residents can pick up a few essentials. Additional shopping options include Walmart, about 4 miles away, and Lowe’s, which is around a 6-mile drive.West Mountain residents celebrate with neighboring cities
Sitting about 6 miles between Clarks Summit and 4 miles from downtown Scranton, residents of West Mountain travel to either city for the many events that happen throughout the year. Rillstone mentioned The Clarks Summit Festival of Ice, which takes place each January. Every year, sculptures matching an annual theme line the streets. The ice festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024 with the theme “Jurassic Ice.”West Scranton High earns athletic achievements
West Mountain students attend Scranton School District, rated C-plus by Niche. They can start at Isaac Tripp Elementary School, which scores a C, before going to West Scranton Intermediate School, which has a C-minus. Teenagers attend West Scranton High School, which earns a B-minus and features an athletics department with 16 sports including many that have received state or regional awards. The softball team had three members qualify for All-State Players, and the wrestling team saw four people become Individual District 2 Champions in the 2023 season.Play and learn at McDade Park
McDade Park sits on 180 acres of former coal mining terrain. Amenities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a children’s fishing pond and open fields used for sledding in the winter. The Boundless Playground is a large structure with accessible slides, swings and areas for kids to climb. The path surrounding the playground features designated quiet zones and a butterfly garden. The park is home to the Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour, which takes people 300 feet underground to walk them through how people mined in the Industrial Revolution, and the Anthracite Heritage Museum, which teaches the history of hard coal mining and Pennsylvania immigrant culture. Also in the neighborhood is Fawnwood Golf Complex, which offers a mini golf course and a driving range for people to practice their swings.
Interstate 476 runs through West Mountain
Interstate 476, known as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, cuts through the middle of the neighborhood. This toll road allows easy access to greater Pennsylvania and increases the traffic flow through the area. The County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) runs a bus route from Clarks Summit to Viewmont Mall. It offers shared ride services, including Rural Transportation, which takes eligible passengers three-quarters of a mile further than the end of the bus route. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, about 8 miles from the neighborhood, offers flights to popular U.S. destinations and international connections.
