Clamming on Sunset Beach, fishing in Sunset Lake
Sunset Beach State Recreation Site stretches across 120 acres of the Pacific coast, with vantage points of Cape Disappointment in the north and Ecola State Park in the south. Hikers can catch a glimpse of bald eagles perched on wooden posts, and seals sometimes make their way to shore. The shoreline—as well as the larger surrounding Clatsop County—is known for clamming, though locals can also experience the beach by car. “It’s wide and sandy,” Regan says. “It’s one of the few [beaches] left in Oregon you can drive on.”Sunset Beach is also the destination of the Fort-to-Sea Trail. Starting in Fort Clatsop to the east, the 6.5-mile trail cuts across the neighborhood to reach the ocean, recreating the path Lewis and Clark would’ve taken in the winter between 1805 and 1806. Half a mile inland, Sunset Lake provides more waterfront recreation. The nearby Sunset Lake Campground and RV Park has firepits, picnic tables and a general store. A wooden dock overlooks a layer of lily pads, while anglers can fish for bass, trout and catfish.
Espresso at The Nest and Mé Latte Espresso
There are several places to get coffee in Surf Pines before a day on the beach. Customers will find quiche, croissant sandwiches, scones and chocolate tahini rolls, along with espresso, specialty lattes and teas in a cheery blue space called The Nest by Dough Dough. Further south, Mé Latte Espresso is a firetruck red coffee hut that brews flavored lattes to be enjoyed with muffins, bagels or biscotti. It also offers frosty blended coffees and refreshing smoothies for those hot summer days. Almost equidistant from Seaside and Warrenton, Surf Pine residents have access to grocery stores like Safeway and Fred Meyer in both towns between 5 and 10 miles away.Beachfront homes part of Surf Pines Homeowners Association
Homes in Surf Pines line the offshoots of Manion Road, while beachfront estates enjoy views of the vast Pacific on Ocean Road. Ranch-style homes—seemingly built during the 1970s in waves, and also between the 1990s and early 2000s or after 2020—can cost between $500,000 and $700,000. Sprawling single-level homes and larger, two-story houses built after the 1970s can fetch between $900,000 and $1.8 million. Houses on the coast come with trails that lead straight to the water, and many feature weathered shingles that add to the beachy look of Surf Pines. Most residents belong to the Surf Pines Homeowners Association, though it mainly enforces safety measures, like the neighborhood's 25-mile-per-hour speed limits. “It’s not about what you can build or not build. There are no design standards,” Regan says. “It’s about maintaining the roads and the safety officer who lives at the south gate.”
Beachfront homes on Ocean Drive
Sunset Beach Road runs from the coastline, past The Nest by Dough Dough and Sunset Lake, to merge into the Oregon Coast Highway. It travels north to Warrenton and Astoria and south to Gearhart, Seaside and Cannon Beach. Ocean and Manion drives run parallel to each other along the west side of the neighborhood. Homes on Ocean Drive face the Pacific Ocean, while several cul-de-sacs shoot off Manion Drive, one of the main residential stretches in Surf Pines.Protective public school locations mitigate flood damage
Children in Seaside can begin their K-12 journey at Pacific Ridge Elementary School, which was established in 2020 and is yet to be scored by Niche. Seaside Middle School earns a 2 out of 10 from GreatSchools, while Seaside High School earns a B-minus from Niche. High schoolers can choose between a variety of electives, like calligraphy, graphic design, criminal justice, culinary arts and a food truck specialty course, in addition to extracurricular clubs for community service, creative writing and robotics.Because the coastal area is at an increased risk of potential ocean flooding, all three schools are located on the east side of a hill that protects students from high tides.
