Named after an active volcano
Perched along the coast of Lake Washington, Mount Baker is an affluent suburban neighborhood named after the third tallest mountain in Washington. Unlike the active volcano of Mount Baker itself, which is over 140,000 years old, the neighborhood of Mount Baker features newly developed land with a diverse population of young people. Realtor Deidre Hicks of Berkshire Hathaway has sold almost $20 million worth of property in the Seattle area. “The people who live here are a mix of older families who own their property, and younger, white-collar workers,” Deidra says. Mount Baker offers residents convenient access to nearby Seattle, which is just a 3-mile drive west of the neighborhood. Schools, public parks and shopping opportunities are abundant, along with scenic views of Lake Washington.

Large homes on small lots
Homes in the area primarily consist of Craftsman-style bungalows and contemporary Ranch houses. There are also a few larger, midcentury Modern houses that feature striking geometric facades and large cuts of glass. The streets are narrow and lined with mature foliage on either side. Property prices range from $800,000 for a small bungalow, to over $2 million for a large contemporary house. Most homes are tightly packed together and lack large grassy lawns. The median property price of Mount Baker is $1 million. This is a tightly squeezed housing market in highly desirable location near Seattle. Demand is high and supply of houses is low. A recently sold single-story, four-bedroom Ranch-style house closed for $988,000.

International flavors
While the neighborhood is primarily residential, there is a unique international dining hub off Rainier Avenue. My area is dangerous, there too many homeless people and seem like undocumented people too. They stand along the pavements and I feel unsafe when I walk around the neighborhood.

We adore our neighborhood. It's central, walkable, beautiful and charming. The lake is a huge draw and we spend lots of time at Mt Baker park with our son and dogs.

Very diverse, close to the water and close access to public transportation. Very wealthy neighborhood closer to the water but also a large portion of middle class homes farther West.
