Flowering shrubs bring beauty and festivals to Semmes
Everything is coming up...azaleas in the city of Semmes and the aptly named Azalea neighborhood, which hosts its long-running Azalea Festival every March. “The Azalea Festival is held at the high school right behind us,” says Robin Dixon, facilities director at the Semmes Recreation & Community Center, which sits beside Montgomery High School. “That’s where the Azalea Festival is because it’s very large out there. The bus ramps — people are able to set up their tents. It’s usually a beautiful, beautiful day.” Although its claim to fame has been surpassed, Semmes was once known as the “nursery capital of the world” thanks to its dozens of plant nurseries and garden centers. A welcoming, family friendly place, Azalea is convenient to greater Mobile and the Mississippi state line.

Families and dog owners enjoy their proximity to Viking Park
Full-brick ranch-style homes, some with Tudor-features, Craftsman-style single-family homes with columns and two-car garages and larger Craftsman-style estates are scattered across Azalea. Many homes are on cul-de-sacs off Blackwell Nursery Road and Broughton Road. Paved driveways and well-manicured lawns are common features, and the houses often border tree-shaded streets. Some are tucked into cul-de-sacs or on short loops that provide a feeling of privacy. Subdivisions include Chesterfield Place, which has an HOA and associated fees, Churchill Downs and Blakewood Estates. Home prices range from $158,000 for a contemporary rancher in Churchill Down to $335,000 for a four-bedroom brick Colonial with garage in Blakewood Estates.

Biomedical Sciences is the themed academy at Montgomery High School
Media-minded students on the Eagle Eye News Team at Semmes Elementary School start the day with a three-minute newsy video announcing birthdays, the lunch menu and the weather. Niche grades the school a B. After school clubs available for students at Semmes Middle include archery, band and Scholar’s Bowl. Semmes Middle earns a C from Niche. Like other Mobile County High Schools, Montgomery High offers several themed academies that direct a student's course of study. The high school's signature academy is Biomedical Sciences. The high school earns a C+ from Niche.

The Semmes Community Center hosts celebratory events
One community anchor is the Semmes Recreation & Community Center, which borders Viking Park (formerly Semmes Community Park) near Montgomery High School. A new Semmes Welcome Center is set to open in the spring of 2024 beside the community center, which stays busy with events. “Just anything you can think of, whether it's a baby shower, a wedding, or a birthday party. Your family reunion,” says Dixon. Viking Park next door keeps kids busy with its playground, and dog owners can now let their dogs exercise at the new dog parks. It also has baseball and soccer fields. Organized events for seniors are held further east on Moffett Road/U.S. 98 at the senior center. “They are there 8am to 5 pm for the senior citizens,” Dixon says.

Hickory Pit Too is longtime favorite for downhome Southern cooking
Restaurant and auto repair shops line Moffett Road, which doubles as the northern border of the neighborhood. “The main restaurant here in Semmes is called Hickory Pit Too,” Dixon says. “It’s country cooking.” Fast food restaurants, Mexican restaurants and a Walmart also hug Moffett Road. The closest grocery stores, says Dixon, are the Winn-Dixie and Piggly Wiggly, and a Publix will be opening soon. Busy downtown Mobile is 20 miles southeast. Residents will need a car.

Azalea sits midway between Mississippi and downtown Mobile
In far western Mobile County, Azalea sits almost equidistant — about 15 miles — between greater Mobile as well as towns and jobs in Mississippi. The I-10 is 20 miles south. “If you go down I-10 you come up to Chevron and some of the big, big plants,” where some locals commute, Dixon says,

The Azalea Festival brings the community together
Not surprisingly, the biggest annual event in the area is the Azalea Festival, typically held in March. The beauty of the blooming azaleas is the headline event, but supporting players include a car show, live entertainment, kid’s activities and food and craft vendors. In recognition of its other famous flowering shrub, the city also hosts the Semmes Camellia Festival in January. And like the rest of Mobile, Semmes celebrates Mardi Gras with enthusiasm. The city added a February Mardi Market to its lineup in 2023.
