Bienville
Ranch-style homes "with more of that country feel"
Most homes in Bienville “have more of that country feel to them,” Watson says. There are ranch-style houses and Craftsman Cottages from the 1970s and ‘80s. Many sit on half- to one-acre lots, with spacious front yards stretching out to the street. Curbside storm drains help mitigate flooding from Pretty Branch, which runs straight through the neighborhood. Pine and hickory trees tower over rooftops and create some much-needed shade for backyard barbecues on the patio. New Traditional homes with quarter-acre lawns and neatly landscaped flowerbeds are on the south side of Bienville in the Magnolia Grove subdivision. These properties sit in small cul-de-sacs lined with sidewalks that lead straight to the golf course across the street. Listing prices here typically range from about $300,000 to $450,000, while the older ranch-style homes can go for as low as $115,000. Empty lots make up most of the available listings as Semmes continues to grow. Their prices typically range from about $25,000 to $100,000.Bienville students attend one of Alabama's largest high schools
Bienville students are zoned for Mobile County Public Schools. Many begin preschool at Orchard Elementary and move to CL Scarborough Middle in sixth grade. Niche gives Orchard a C rating, and Scarborough gets a C-minus. Students living along Schillinger Road are zoned for Semmes Elementary and Middle Schools. While the elementary school scores a B, Semmes Middle earns a solid C. All these schools feed into Mary G. Montgomery High, which is one of the largest high schools in Alabama. It earns a C-plus and has five academy programs specializing in biomedical science, agri-business and engineering leadership.Pedro's Tacos & Tequila Bar hosts karaoke on Saturdays
A small commercial corridor is at the neighborhood’s north end, where Moffet and Schillinger Roads intersect. It has a Walmart Supercenter, Dollar Tree and a handful of restaurants. Pedro’s Tacos & Tequila Bar hosts karaoke on the patio every Saturday night. Inside, colorful lights dangle from the ceiling, and big screen TVs line the walls, making it a great spot to watch football games in the fall. While there are plenty of fast-food spots to choose from, Watson says Foosacklys is most people’s go-to spot. The regional franchise serves “just chicken and fries, but people really love it,” she says. “We’ve had other chicken places open up, but they don’t last because you can’t beat the food or the prices at Foosacklys.” Most of the shopping and other local restaurants are about 10 miles away in Midtown Mobile.Semmes Municipal Park is right across the street
Semmes Municipal Park is right across Schillinger Road. It features a canopy-covered fitness station right next to the playground and a small pond for catch-and-release fishing. Sprawling across 27 acres, the park also has an 18-hole disc golf course and a splash pad that opened in 2022. Magnolia Grove Golf Course is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, which includes 11 premier courses scattered across Alabama. It sits immediately south of Bienville and ranks as one of the “Top 50 Public Courses” in Golf World Magazine.Bienville is split between Mobile and Semmes
Bienville is split between city limits. Anything east of Charmingdale Drive is part of Mobile, while the City of Semmes comprises its western half. U.S. Route 98 borders the neighborhood’s north side and links to Mississippi in just 15 miles. The Springhill Medical Center sits about 10 miles east. From here, it’s just over 5 miles to Downtown Mobile and the new international airport.
