A residential suburb on the border of Semmes and Mobile
Many may hear “Bienville” and immediately think of one of Mobile’s founding fathers, but the word’s origins say a lot more about this intercity suburb. Bienville in Old French translates to “two towns,” making it a toponym, as the neighborhood is bisected by Semmes and Mobile’s city limits. Its unique outlying yet central position is one of the reasons Ashleigh Watson says, “so many people really like living out that way.” A lifelong local and experienced Realtor with Keller Williams, Watson says, in Bienville, “You get a little further from the hustle and bustle of Mobile, but you’ve still got all the conveniences right up the road in Semmes.”

Ranch-style homes "with more of that country feel"
Most homes in Bienville “have more of that country feel to them,” Watson says. There are ranch-style houses and Craftsman Cottages from the 1970s and ‘80s. Many sit on half- to one-acre lots, with spacious front yards stretching out to the street. Curbside storm drains help mitigate flooding from Pretty Branch, which runs straight through the neighborhood. Pine and hickory trees tower over rooftops and create some much-needed shade for backyard barbecues on the patio. New Traditional homes with quarter-acre lawns and neatly landscaped flowerbeds are on the south side of Bienville in the Magnolia Grove subdivision. These properties sit in small cul-de-sacs lined with sidewalks that lead straight to the golf course across the street. Listing prices here typically range from about $300,000 to $450,000, while the older ranch-style homes can go for as low as $115,000. Empty lots make up most of the available listings as Semmes continues to grow. Their prices typically range from about $25,000 to $100,000.

Niche gives Orchard a C rating, and Scarborough gets a C-minus. Students living along Schillinger Road are zoned for Semmes Elementary and Middle Schools. While the elementary school scores a B, Semmes Middle earns a solid C. All these schools feed into Mary G. Montgomery High, which is one of the largest high schools in Alabama. It earns a C-plus and has five academy programs specializing in biomedical science, agri-business and engineering leadership.

Pedro's Tacos & Tequila Bar hosts karaoke on Saturdays
A small commercial corridor is at the neighborhood’s north end, where Moffet and Schillinger Roads intersect. It has a Walmart Supercenter, Dollar Tree and a handful of restaurants. Pedro’s Tacos & Tequila Bar hosts karaoke on the patio every Saturday night. Inside, colorful lights dangle from the ceiling, and big screen TVs line the walls, making it a great spot to watch football games in the fall. While there are plenty of fast-food spots to choose from, Watson says Foosacklys is most people’s go-to spot. The regional franchise serves “just chicken and fries, but people really love it,” she says. “We’ve had other chicken places open up, but they don’t last because you can’t beat the food or the prices at Foosacklys.” Most of the shopping and other local restaurants are about 10 miles away in Midtown Mobile.
