Gardeners and green thumbs, welcome to the neighborhood. The city of Semmes is renowned for its plant nurseries, and several of them call Big Creek home. Picture rows of greenhouses flanked by tidy plots of ornamentals. All of this greenery is surrounded by farmhouses, forests and a handful of manicured subdivisions where Craftsman-style new builds gleam under the Alabama sun. Flowering shrubs, particularly azaleas and camellias, are showcased at the annual Azalea and Camellia Festivals, when the bright blooms bring admiring crowds. Big Creek borders U.S. 98, also known as Moffett Road, which is lined with restaurants and well-tended local parks, maintained by an engaged city government.
