The camellia thrives in Semmes, known for its warm weather
The camellia is the Alabama state flower, and it grows in abundance in and around Semmes thanks to the soil and pleasant warm weather. Cold weather is not the friend of this persnickety plant. Native to Asia and a member of the tea family, the camellia is a flowering shrub that blooms white, crimson and seemingly every shade of pink. Residents of Camelia and its tidy subdivisions — part of greater Semmes — likely enjoy the warm weather too, not to mention the easy-going, friendly vibe and the slower-pace of life. Just ask any Semmes local. “People love it here. They love it. It’s a close-knit community,” says Robin Dixon, Facilities Director at Semmes Recreation & Community Center for almost 15 years. “It’s a great place.” And note that the Camelia neighborhood is spelled with only one “L," bless its heart.

Oversized meals grab the spotlight at Hickory Pit Too and Semmes House of Pizza
Hickory Pit Too just north of the neighborhood draws fans from well outside of Semmes, particularly for its hamburger, The BossHawg. This 20-ounce beef patty is topped with pork barbecue. “It’s country cooking,” says Dixon. “I know in the past I’ve seen on the sign, maybe on Friday night, they will have seafood, but it is just a small, country cooking restaurant.” Another favored local joint is Semmes House of Pizza. And though it doesn't have a BossHawg pizza, it does tout its 28-inch pizzas. Fast food restaurants and Mexican joints line U.S. 98/Moffett Road north of Camelia. Winn-Dixie is a convenient stop for groceries.
