Fairview is a quiet but growing suburb in West Mobile
New subdivisions are popping up across West Mobile, a rural area growing increasingly popular with homebuyers thanks to its low-key vibe and lack of overdevelopment. Fairview, a smaller neighborhood in the region, sits 18 miles west of downtown Mobile. The Mississippi state line is a few miles west. But it’s not all farmland and isolation. The Mobile Regional Airport is nearby, and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove is also close. The adjacent town of Semmes is creating and marketing more events to help build a sense of community. “It’s a very nice family area,” says Hanna Rudzinsky, a Realtor with Salt Coast Realty, Inc. “There are lots of good subdivisions there that are close to town, but there’s enough breathing room that families love.”

Homes occupy large lots in walkable neighborhoods
Homes are a mix of ranch-style residences, bungalows, a few farmhouses and newer builds. The subdivisions in the Fairview area have lots of appeal for families. Many of the subdivisions are older and well-established, with mature landscaping, Rudzinsky says, and they are typically fairly quiet. Lot sizes are ample too. “Most houses there will have a ¼ acre to a ½ acre lot. It’s nice and spacious and there’s plenty of elbow room,” Rudzinsky says. “There are no sidewalks, but it’s very walkable.” Home prices range from $140,000 for a three-bedroom rancher to $712,000 for a revamped 4-bedroom farmhouse with stables on 19 acres.

Golfers and disc golfers play rounds on woodsy courses
Disc golfers can hone their skills on The Admiral, a championship disc golf course at Semmes Municipal Park about three miles north of the neighborhood. Designed by John Houck, one of the top course designers in the nation, the 65-par course hosts regular tournaments and bedevils players with its subtle topographical changes across fairways that navigate forests and ponds. Younger kids can clamber around the playground at the park and, in warmer months, enjoy the splash pad. The Crossing Course, one of three golf courses at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove, has hosted the LPGA tour. The courses here unfurl past ponds and marshes through pine and hardwood forests. The Semmes Walking Trail beside Montgomery High School stays busy, Rudzinsky says, and dog walkers and folks pushing baby strollers are a common sight.

From books to produce to trading cards, it’s likely for sale at the Mobile Flea Market
There are not a lot of choices for shopping and dining close to Fairview – and that's how locals like it. “People go there because they want to get away from all that," Rudzinsky says. “It’s a much quieter area.” The busy I-10 cuts through Mobile, but it is not particularly close to Fairview, which keeps its vibe more suburban. But there are some noteworthy options. The Mobile Flea Market, open weekends year-round, is the largest flea market on the Gulf Coast. It sprawls across 30 acres just south of Fairview. “I’ve bought everything from chickens to fruit plants to coveralls. They have a good mix of everything,” Rudzinsky says. For restaurants, recommended choices include Semmes House of Pizza, known for its New York-style pizza, and Sabai Thai Cuisine, which has Thai and sushi on the menu. Groceries are sold at Rouses Market on Airport Boulevard.

The nearby city of Semmes is hosting more events
Local events are becoming more prominent. "Semmes recently elected a mayor who is proactive about providing community events, to build a sense of community,” Rudzinsky says.
