Fire Tower hosts the annual Camellia Festival
When hearing the name Fire Tower, it can be hard to know what to expect. But this comfortable suburb, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Mobile, is not a five-alarm situation. A hub of history and local beauty in the city of Semmes, Fire Tower is marked by tidy subdivisions convenient to schools and parks. But things do get showy in January during the Semmes Camellia Festival when this flowering shrub preens in full glory for the adoring masses. As for the history, Fire Tower was a railroad community established in the early 1900s to support the Semmes Land Company. The railroad carried yellow pine from the north. Semmes is also known for its large plant nurseries, which showcase ornamental shrubs and once earned the city bragging rights as the "nursery capital of the world."

From Fire Tower, it is a 20-mile drive southeast to downtown Mobile. It’s also a launch pad for work at surrounding chemical plants. “We’re not far from I-10, where people will work at Chevron and some of the big chemical plants,” says Robin Dixon, facilities director at the Semmes Recreation & Community Center. “And of course when you leave Semmes and you head north, there are some chemical plants up that way.” Some of the subdivisions have their own sidewalks, and the schools may be walkable from some neighborhoods, but most homebuyers will need a car for day-to-day travel.
