Rothfield
Suburban Neighborhood in Semmes, Alabama
Mobile County 36575, 36608
Rothfield is comprised of a few smaller subdivisions
Rothfield can be broken down into a few subdivisions with varying home prices, Ponderosa being one of the bigger ones. “In Ponderosa, your top-end price is around $220,000,” Hinton says. “But an average home in good shape is about $170,000.” In the Petaluma subdivision off Snow Road North, the average price runs closer to $150,000. Rothfield’s various three-bedroom homes tend to follow American Craftsman and ranch-style designs, with the occasional Cape Cod home. Streets aren’t quite wide enough for parking, but paved and gravel driveways are spacious enough to accommodate multiple cars. Lots are spacious, usually spanning above a third of an acre, but it’s not uncommon to see parcels one acre in size or larger.A splash pad and golf courses
Kids beat the heat at the Semmes Municipal Park and Splash Pad. The park also offers a playground, an outdoor gym, a fishing pond for anglers and “The Admiral,” a championship disc golf course designed by John Houck, whose course design skills are frequently ranked the best in the world by disc golfers. Golf World Magazine readers recently voted Magnolia Grove one of best 50 public golf courses, but Rothfield residents will have to play a round to see for themselves. Golf courses offered at Magnolia Grove include the par-3 Short Course and the par-71 Falls.Well-rated schools that provide career preparation
Students are divided between two school feeder patterns. Students on the south end of the neighborhood can attend Elsie Collier Elementary, Bernice J. Causey Middle and Baker High School. Collier Elementary and Causey Middle earn B ratings from Niche, while Baker High receives a B-plus. At Baker, students can participate in 10 “Baker Academies of Advanced Careers,” with focuses such as early childhood education, engineering and fine arts and media entertainment. Students participating in academies can also gain hands-on experience through job shadows and internships. The University of South Alabama is 15 minutes away, straight down Lanner Williams Road.Semmes is chock-full of events
“We have several events that are well-loved by the community,” says Elizabeth Lovelady, Events Coordinator and Deputy City Clerk for the City of Semmes. “Food truck Fridays are popular, and our Independence Day fireworks celebration always draws a crowd. During the holidays, the whole place is lit up like a Hallmark movie. We love it.” Semmes also hosts a Camellia Festival and an Azalea Festival.Rothfield is just next to the airport
Though the Mobile Regional Airport is just south of the neighborhood, most residents don’t mind the noise and, if anything, enjoy the convenience. No major interstates or highways pass through Rothfield, with Tanner Williams Road, Snow Road North and Howells Ferry Road being the primary thoroughfares. Taking Tanner Williams Road, it’s a 15-minute drive to the University of South Alabama and a 30-minute drive to downtown Mobile.Rothfield locals never go hungry
A few casual restaurants can be found in downtown Semmes, but as Hinton says, “You gotta go into Mobile if you want to eat fancy.” When residents are feeling extra hungry, they can order a 28-inch New York-style pizza pie from the Semmes House of Pizza. And if they still somehow have room in their stomach, they can try the Boss Hawg challenge at Hickory Pit Too, a 20-ounce hamburger topped with 6 ounces of pulled pork and additional toppings. Customers who somehow complete this massive meal earn a free T-shirt. And this barbecue restaurant has plenty more on the menu too, from popcorn shrimp po-boys to Mexican baked potatoes. A Winn-Dixie can be found in downtown Semmes and right off Zeigler Boulevard, near other stores like Dollar General and Tractor Supply Co.
