Abundant outdoor recreational opportunities
Oxford’s rural nature means that there are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities for residents to enjoy. The Oxford Land Trust is a local nonprofit that works to “preserve the rural character of the Town of Oxford” through land acquisition and preservation of natural resources. The Trust maintains several trails and properties, including the Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary, 600 acres of wooded land with 15 miles of hiking trails. Additionally, the town’s Parks and Recreation Department not only maintains multiple parks throughout the area, but also organizes recreational sports leagues for all ages, fitness classes and special events throughout the year, including the annual Fishing Rodeo and the Summer Nights at the Beach concert series.
With the Housatonic River and Lake Zoar on the town’s eastern edge, boating and fishing are popular pastimes here. Jackson Cove Park sits on the banks of Lake Zoar, and offers visitors access to a playground, a picnic pavilion, lakeside beach access and hiking trails. A few miles closer to the center of town is Posypanko Park, the home of the Babe Ruth League summer baseball games for area youth, as well as a playground and a basketball court. At Soutford Falls State Park in the north end of town, visitors can take advantage of 2 miles of trails that wind through 169 acres of woodland. And golfers need not feel left out of the fun, with The Golf Club at Oxford Greens located in the northwest part of town.

Dining and shopping options galore
Its small-town charm and feeling of seclusion are the primary draws for those seeking a home in Oxford, but the area also offers residents easy proximity to plenty of big-city conveniences. The newly opened Quarry Walk shopping center is centrally located in Oxford, where residents can take care of grocery shopping at Market 32 and any home necessities at Ace Hardware. There are also several local boutiques in Quarry Walk to provide sustenance during extended shopping excursions. For more intensive retail therapy, the cities of both Danbury and New Haven are about twenty miles away. And when the need is at its most extreme, the retail shrine of New York City is just a three-hour train ride away.
When dining out is on the agenda, the place that literally put Oxford on the map is the Oxford House. Because of the town’s location on the route farmers took from Litchfield to New York in the 18th century, Oxford was a well-known stopping place for weary travelers to rest. The Oxford House Tavern was a place favored for its comfortable accommodations and excellent food, and the tavern continues that tradition today, with a menu that features everything from soups and salads to seafood, pasta and steaks. Another popular option is Char & Lemon, where wood-fired pizza is the name of the game, and residents make sure that, no matter where they eat, they end up at The Country Creamery for a scoop or two of ice cream served in an old-fashioned setting.

The median price of real estate in Oxford hovers around $550,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $262 per square foot. “Houses are farther apart than in other parts of Connecticut,” says Taylor. “So it can be a very quiet area.” That spacing is due, in part, to the median lot size of the area, which is 71,000 square feet. By comparison, the national median is just under 14,000 square feet. A three-bedroom/two-bathroom colonial-style home on a 2.5-acre lot can sell for around $260,000, and prices can go up to $2 million for a five-bedroom/seven-bathroom new-construction contemporary-style home on a 1.5-acre lot overlooking Lake Zoar.

Oxford schools
Students here are served by the Oxford School District, which earns an overall rating of B from Niche. Children can attend Quaker Farms School through the second grade before transitioning to Oxford Center School for grades 3-5. Then it’s on to Great Oak School and finally on to Oxford High School. Quaker Farms earns a C-plus from Niche, Oxford Center earns a B, Great Oak earns a B-minus and Oxford High earns a B. In addition to a rigorous academic program, students at Oxford High School participate in a senior-year capstone project, and they have the opportunity to play 17 varsity-level sports throughout their high school years. Alternatively, parents can avail themselves of multiple private schools in the area, including Choate Rosemary Hall in nearby Wallingford, which is rated as the best private school in the state by Niche.
