North Lake is a quiet community on the Lake Michigan waterfront
Located on the banks of Lake Michigan, Sheboygan’s North Lake neighborhood is a residential enclave offering quiet streets close to local schools. Mature trees and lush greenery surround ranch-style homes; many sit on spacious quarter-acre lots. Some lakefront properties have scenic views of the water with a nice breeze from the waves, while others can access the rocky beaches at 6th Street Park. “In the summer, when it gets hot, you can go to the lake and the temp drops 10 degrees,” says Susan Erdmann, a local broker at Real Estate Property Shop LLC with more than 10 years of experience. “It’s a really nice climate.” Aside from a neighborhood bar, locals head a few miles into downtown for fork-to-table restaurants.
Ranch-style homes have generally low turnover
Homes in North Lake were primarily built in the latter half of the 20th century, with a small amount of infill properties in recent years. Ranch-style homes typically sit on quarter-acre lots, enveloped by greenery including pine, maple and elm trees. Many of the homes feature vinyl, stone, or brick exteriors. Waterfront properties are in the highest demand, offering scenic views of Lake Michigan. Prices typically range from $150,000 to $500,000, though properties on larger half-acre parcels can range from $700,000 to $1.2 million. Turnover is relatively low, with residents sometimes staying for generations. “Part of it is because we had a big boom in the market years ago, and a lot of people bought with interest rates at 2-3%, but now they don’t want their interest rates to go up,” Erdmann says. “They remodel or do great stuff with their yard, but they’re not moving.”
Nearby schools offer a variety of extracurricular activities
Pigeon River Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, offers after-school programs like the Green Gang Environmental Club, where students take nature walks, learn to garden and pick up litter. The B-minus-rated Urban Middle offers a broader range of extracurriculars, including sports like archery and flag football teams, as well as chess and photography clubs. The B-plus-rated Sheboygan North High is located just outside the neighborhood. The school includes a manufacturing program in partnership with local manufacturing companies and Lakeshore Technical College.
Lakefront recreation and smaller neighborhood parks
Locals can access the rocky lakefront at Sixth Street Park, though there’s more space for swimming and surfing at the South Side Municipal Beach, a few miles south. Other neighborhood green spaces include Charles Voight Park and Rudy Mahler Park, both of which have playgrounds and open fields.
Local sports bar and more restaurants in downtown Sheboygan
Northstar Bar, located on the neighborhood’s edge, is a gathering spot for nearby residents, especially during major sporting events. There’s a Piggly Wiggly grocery store less than a mile away. Downtown Sheboygan is a few miles south, home to popular restaurants like Field to Fork Café, which has an in-house bakery, coffee roastery and juice bar. The Black Pig restaurant, also downtown, sources many of its ingredients from local farms, serving upscale American fare and craft cocktails.
A few miles from downtown Sheboygan and Interstate 43
Downtown Sheboygan is a few miles south, and Shoreline Metro bus lines stop along major roads like Eighth Street. The nearest Interstate 43 interchange is about 3 miles away; residents can take I-43 less than 60 miles south to Milwaukee and about 65 miles north to Green Bay. Hospital Sisters Health System St. Nicholas Hospital is about 3 miles away, while the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 70 miles away.
