West Sheboygan is a commuter-friendly suburb near the interstate

West Sheboygan is a suburban community with a very commuter-friendly location, close to Interstate 43, hospitals and industrial facilities. “We have huge global manufacturers in the area,” says Susan Erdmann, a lifelong resident of the Sheboygan area and local broker at Real Estate Property Shop LLC. “They make car parts, or stuff for hospitals; it’s a great place for that.” In addition to employment centers, the community is conveniently close to retailers and grocery stores on Taylor Drive. While the neighborhood’s north side is more residential and industrial, the south side is occupied by parks, nature preserves and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Sheboygan campus.

Mostly 20th-century homes on the community’s north side

Most homes are concentrated on the northern half of the neighborhood, including a mix of mostly early 20th-century cottages and midcentury minimalist ranch-style homes. Properties tend to be close-set with square front yards and well-maintained sidewalks, though some sit on quarter- or third-acre parcels. Prices for single-family homes range from $140,000 to $370,000, depending on age and condition. Single-story condos in the community’s northwest corner date to the 1980s and early 2000s, and typically range from $150,000 to $350,000.

Public and private schools, plus a satellite college campus

James Madison Elementary and Horace Mann Middle both earn a B-minus from Niche, offering Dual Language Programming for Spanish and English-speaking students. Additional support is available for multilingual students, including Hmong speakers. Students at the B-rated South High can enroll in the Red Raider Manufacturing program, which partners with local manufacturing companies and Lakeshore Technical College. The B-rated Sheboygan Lutheran High School is a well-regarded private option on the neighborhood’s south side. University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Sheboygan campus is in the same area, offering bachelor’s degrees in health information, mechanical engineering and other fields.

Close to highways, hospitals and other facilities

Highway 23 and Interstate 43 intersect on the neighborhood’s west side. Downtown Sheboygan is around 3 miles away, and Milwaukee is about 55 miles away on I-43. Shoreline Metro operates several local bus routes in the area. Hospital Sisters Health System Saint Nicholas Hospital is adjacent to the neighborhood, and Aurora Medical Center is also nearby. These medical centers are major employers in the area, along with manufacturers like the Vollrath Company. The neighborhood has a Cap Index Crime Score of 7 out of 10, compared to a national score of 4.

Preparing for the cold winter months

Like much of the Midwest, residents can expect a fair amount of snow in the winter, though the community is generally well prepared. “A blizzard here means kids are off school for the morning or maybe the whole day,” Erdmann says. “People envision Wisconsin as being this brutally cold, snowy place and not so much around here. We’ll have a week or so of weather below zero.” The lowest temperatures tend to linger around the lakefront, on the town’s east side, meaning West Sheboygan is a little more temperate in the cold season.

Local parks with nearby hiking and fishing

Taylor Park is located between the Sheboygan County Historical Museum, the Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial and the Taylor Hill Water Reservoir, once the country's largest reservoir. The 6-acre green space includes a playground and a picnic shelter. On the neighborhood’s south side, Willow Creek Preserve spans 143 acres with several hiking trails and places to fish along its namesake creek. Esslingen Park is on the Sheboygan River and is popular with boaters and fishers. Several athletic facilities are nearby, including the Field of Dreams baseball diamonds and the Sheboygan Lakers Ice Center.

A mix of national retailers, grocery stores and restaurants

There are several shopping centers along Taylor Drive, including national retailers like Kohl’s and Burlington, as well as several grocery chains like Festival Foods and Aldi. Nearby restaurant options mainly include fast-food joints like Panera, though a handful of locally owned spots are scattered around the area. The family-owned Luigi’s Italian Restaurant has been serving pasta and pizza to the community since 1997. Kame Ramen & Sushi Poke has Japanese cuisine made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Locals can catch new releases at the nearby Marcus Sheboygan Cinema.

Family-focused events at the Bookworm Gardens

The Bookworm Gardens, a botanical garden inspired by children’s literature, is a popular destination for young families, hosting many small events throughout the year. The annual Fairyfolk Festival has been a staple for over 15 years. Taking place over five days in August, the gardens are decorated with gnomes and fairy houses, with special story time readings and kids’ crafts. For one day during the festival, the gardens stay open late for a Masquerade ball with live music, food trucks and themed beverages.
