A rural community in Lake County
Established in 1839, Eagle Creek Township is an unincorporated part of Lake County, Indiana. Suburban-style homes have been added over the years, but the township keeps its rural character with farms, fields and lots of open space. Unlike other townships that have municipalities within them, it stands alone. "In the whole township, no towns or cities have been established," Craig Zandstra, the superintendent of the planning and natural resource division for Lake County Parks, says. Nearby Cedar Lake and West Creek are the other two townships grouped with Eagle Creek as the "Three Creeks." The Illinois line is about 16 miles to the west.
Older properties and new constructions on large plots
Though some properties, like an early 1900s farmhouse, have distinctly old-fashioned charm, most date to the 1970s through '90s, many of them ranch-style homes. It's normal for homesites to have ample space, with five acres or more and perhaps a pole barn, chicken coop or other outbuildings. New construction brings a suburban neighborhood feel to the countryside. Houses are set closer to the street and have driveways and multicar garages. Most township homes go for between $300,000 and $550,000.

Activities at Grand Kankakee Marsh
The Grand Kankakee Marsh is a nearly 2,000-acre park. "It has a hunting program: waterfowl and deer and also turkey in the spring," Zandstra says. There are two boat launches on the Kankakee River, and fishing is very popular. Typical catches include walleye, bass, bluegill and catfish.
The marsh is host to seasonal programs for the community. "We have Kankakee River Days in October," Zandstra says. Students from Lake County and Porter County ride in wooden replica voyageur canoes. "We also have history and science stations set up. Kids can learn about the biology of different species found in the river and around the park." Zandstra says about 1,000 students participated in 2023.
"In May, before the mosquitos really get going, there's the Voyageur Rendezvous," Zandstra says. "It's a historical interpretation of the trapping days of the Kankakee Marsh." The event takes up a whole weekend and features reenactors and vendors.
Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park is popular among hikers.

Many Eagle Creek residents head to downtown Lowell for its unique eateries.
Shop in nearby areas
A drive of about 7 miles to Lowell yields dining and shopping options. Strack & Van Til or Aldi are grocery picks in the area. Cedar Lake is about 13 miles away and has additional retail and amenities. "What I've heard from people is that they go to DeMotte, Roselawn, Hebron or Lowell," Zandstra says. He's known Eagle Creek locals to regularly visit Southlake Mall in Merrillville, about 15 miles north. "It's more of a destination, so they might plan to do more than one thing while they're there."
Over 1,000 students learn at Lowell Senior High School.
Tri-Creek School Corporation
Public schools include Three Creeks Elementary and Lowell Middle, both graded A-minus by Niche. Activities at the elementary school include Robotics, Math Bowl, Spell Bowl and Nifty Notes, the district's honors choir.
Lowell Senior High, with a B-plus from Niche, is listed as Lake County's 6th-best public high school. "Friday night is football at Lowell High School," Judith Walters, clerk-treasurer for the Town of Lowell, says. "Red Devil pride is big." The district, Tri-Creek School Corporation, serves the three townships, Eagle, Cedar and West Creek.
Commutes and major routes
Downtown Chicago is about 60 miles northwest, and since there's no commuter train in the area, driving is a must. U.S. Route 231 and State Route 55 are nearby, but more easily accessible are State Route 2 and Interstate 65, which run through the township. Around the junction point of the two major roads, truck stops, hotels, fast food and businesses make a convenient stop for travelers and locals alike. D.W.'s Junction 2-65, northwest Indiana's live country music destination, is open Friday and Saturday nights and features free line dancing lessons, bar service and the Burger Barn for some fuel to keep those feet stomping.
Taking I-65 about 25 miles north leads to the shores of Lake Michigan, near Gary. In the other direction, I-65 ends in Indianapolis after about 130 miles. Within the county, Lake County Community Services' curb-to-curb transportation services provide rides by reservation for the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
Many Eagle Creek residents head to Lake County Fairgrounds for annual events.
Deep River Waterpark and community events
Community events within the county include customary seasonal and holiday celebrations. In Lowell, there's a Labor Day Festival with parades and fireworks. The Christmas Tyme Lights walk-through at Harvest Tyme Farm is a half-mile journey featuring festive displays and sweet treats.
Deep River Waterpark, the largest waterpark in Chicagoland and northwest Indiana, is about 20 miles to the north. Fun in the pools is a given during the summer, and there are themed ice skating nights in the winter. The waterpark is in Crown Point, as is the Lake County Fairgrounds, home to the Lake County Agricultural Society's annual county fair, one of the largest in the state. It's open to the public all year round and frequently used for markets and other events.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
