Briarcrest's older and newer home options

Briarcrest's older homes include early 20th-century cottages and midcentury ramblers. "Someone could buy an older house — definitely in original condition — maybe for half a million," says Chris Gurnee, team leader of the Chris Gurnee Team, powered by ExP. They are typically under 1,600 square feet and priced from the $500,000s to $900,000s. The 2000s through 2020s brought large contemporary homes and some townhouses. Prices range from the mid-$800,000s to $1.8 million.

Hamlin Park, Lake Washington and the Burke-Gilman Trail

Outdoor community spaces close to Briarcrest homes include South Woods Park, which has trails and is heavily wooded. Hamlin Park, which has baseball and softball fields, a horseshoe pit, a playground and trails is one of the parks under the city's Park Bond Project, with expected closure, upgrades and a possible renaming during 2024 and 2025. A spooky tradition at the park is the Hamlin Halloween Haunt, a free event with hayrides, a campfire and games. Eastside Off-Leash Dog Area is close to Shorecrest High School. Several miles from Briarcrest is Cromwell Park, where Celebrate Shoreline, the city's annual birthday party, is held in August.

The city has a free volunteer-led program called Shoreline Walks, which allows people to explore different neighborhoods, parks and trails. Examples include a 3-mile walk through the Briarcrest neighborhood and Acacia Cemetery, the Hamlin Park cardio walk and a North City to Shoreline Park loop walk. Lake Washington sites include Log Boom Park and Log Boom Pier. Sheridan Beach is a private community members' only beach. Passing the shoreline and parks is a portion of the 20-mile, multiuse Burke-Gilman Trail, which was built on a former railroad corridor. The trail continues into Seattle.

FloAnna's Diner, Botteco Brazil, Safeway and Sheridan Market

To the south, where state Routes 522 and 523 meet, there are some businesses and restaurants. FloAnna's Diner is known for its breakfast dishes and homestyle dinners. Botteco Brazil has a meat-centric menu and creative décor like wood paneling, colorful art and burlap coffee sacks adorning the ceiling. To the north, on 15th Avenue Northeast, there's a commercial area with a Safeway and other stores.

In Lake Forest Park, east, toward the lake, there's Sheridan Market. Previously the site of a roadhouse, the location became home to Sheridan Market in 1952. It's listed on the Washington Heritage Register of Historic Places and now operates as a coffee shop and event venue rather than a grocery store. "We have food for some of our events; my husband makes the most awesome chicken and pork adobo," says Paula Goode, co-owner, along with her husband, Ernesto Pediangco. Goode, a city council member, and Pediangco, a professional musician, are highly involved in the community. "We support live music and community events; that's what we are here to do," Goode says. "We attract a lot of musicians from all over, and we have a lot of families that attend." As a venue, the market has hosted high school bands, political campaign fundraisers and various gatherings and parties.
