With a spot in music’s history books, Downtown Riverfront is the place to go for entertainment in Shreveport. For example, it’s home to the Municipal Auditorium, where the famed country music radio and television show Louisiana Hayride was once broadcast. “We are the birthplace and cradle to many stars, even today,” says Bonné Summers, owner of Apex Communications and Events, who has over 30 years of event planning experience in Shreveport. “There’s not a genre out there that we haven't had some influence on.” In addition to having a flourishing arts district, Downtown Riverfront also includes the Shreveport Aquarium and the Sci-Port Discovery Center, a museum complete with an IMAX dome theater.

Room for all artists — culinary, too
There are plenty of opportunities to support local businesses in Downtown Riverfront. Rhino Coffee roasts and brews its own beans right in Shreveport. Residents can grab a cup, then stroll through The Agora Borealis Marketplace, a gallery that represents over 300 local artists. Similar variety exists in the culinary scene, with Cajun specials at The Blind Tiger and Ernest's Orleans Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge, a long-standing seafood house. Visible during the day, colorful murals adorn brick walls throughout the neighborhood, thanks to initiatives such as Shreveport Commons, a conglomerate repurposing downtown spaces for artists and art programming. At night, the Texas Street Bridge, also known as the Long-Allen Bridge, lights up a section of the Red River that flows across from two resort casinos.

Fairmont Apartments in Downtown Riverfront neighborhood has you living right in the city life.
Apartment living in Downtown Riverfront
While there are little to no standalone houses to be found in Downtown Riverfront, apartment buildings like The Fairmont contribute to the city skyline. Condos occasionally pop up in the market and sell in the $300,000 price range. In terms of neighborhoods close by, Summers says that South Shreveport is booming, with many houses being renovated or completely rebuilt. “South Highlands is still very popular; the Pierremont area is also very popular,” Summers says. “You have houses in the South Highlands from the 1920s that are still being lived in and repurposed." In these nearby areas, there’s a wide variety of housing styles and sizes, from ranch-styles and cottages to mansions and French Chateaus. Prices range from $125,000 to $600,000.
Parks to bring people together
On the banks of the Red River, Festival Plaza is a park designed for events, complete with a stage and concession stands. It's within walking distance of many of the local shops, restaurants and casinos. When getting close, it’s easy to spot the signature tall, blue tower. Riverview Park has also become a Downtown staple, with its interactive fountain and viewing area at the summit of a waterfall.

Celebrating the Mudbug and Cajun Cuisine
Many annual festivals are held in Festival Plaza to celebrate music, art and culture. The Mudbug Madness festival has become one of Louisiana's largest and most popular Cajun celebrations. Held during Memorial Day Weekend, festivities include a crawfish eating contest and a treasure hunt.

Easy transport between sister cities
Interstate 20 crosses the Red River near Shreveport Downtown Airport and heads towards Shreveport’s sister city, Bossier City. The Shreveport Area Transit System runs between the two cities and doesn’t charge fares within city limits. For far-away destinations, the Shreveport Regional Airport is about a 7-mile, or 12-minute drive from Downtown Riverfront.
Important to Know
Corporations like General Motors and United Gas Corporations once thrived in Shreveport, but the loss of these industries caused widespread unemployment. The city has since dealt with high drug and crime rates. Large-scale companies like Amazon and Schlumberger Technology Corporation are beginning to move into Shreveport, creating new job opportunities, which Summers says has made a positive impact.
