Freestate-North Highlands
New and established ranch-style homes
Freestate-North Highland comprises a blend of industrial, commercial and residential areas, with more single-family homes than other housing types. Turning off North Market Street, established ranch-style homes line winding roads where mature trees shade the spacious lawns with comfortable setbacks. Most were built between the 1960s and 80s and tend to have brick siding or accents featuring a blend of carports and garages. A modest two-bedroom can sell for below $50,000, although the median price for the neighborhood is around $225,000, which is enough to purchase a three-bedroom home. New developments have also been springing up lately, with more contemporary single-story homes with neat front yards framed by a narrow strip of sidewalks. These homes come in a number of predetermined styles at a range of prices, though they can list for up to $340,000.Caddo Parish schools with magnet alternatives
Families can send their kids to Caddo Parish Public Schools, starting at North Highlands Elementary, a B-plus-rated school according to Niche. Donnie Bickham Middle and Northwood High both earn a C-plus grade, and Northwood shows its investment in its baseball and football programs through recent updates to its sporting facilities like new turf and seating. Caddo Parish also has several highly-rated magnet schools that kids can apply to attend.ParksIndoor and outdoor exercise at Mamie Hicks Park and Community Center
Residents enjoy the weather on sunny days with a walk through the neighborhood or a trip to Mamie Hicks Park and Community Center. Kids can burn some energy on the playground and swing set, or the whole family can bring lunch for a picnic under the pavilion. There might be games on the baseball field on evenings and weekends, and there’s always a chance for a pickup tennis match on the courts. Inside the community center, neighborhood meetings and regular workout classes are held in the gymnasium. Although the Red River is nearby, most locals head to Cross Lake for waterfront activities. It’s about 15 to 20 minutes away and offers a boat ramp, fishing pier and serene views of the calm waters.Grocery stores close by on North Market Street
Most businesses are located along North Market Street, with a handful of shopping centers that provide for residents’ everyday needs. Folks stock up at Shoppers Value Foods and at Brookside’s in North Market Place. A selection of fast food chains surrounds the shopping centers, with a handful of local restaurants serving Louisiana favorites like Southern comfort food, barbecue, and seafood.Ride the Sportrans bus or hop on Interstate 220
With Interstate 220 cutting through the neighborhood and entrances to Interstates 49 and 20 close by, residents of Freestate-North Highlands have unparalleled access to getting around the greater Shreveport-Bossier area. The Shreveport Downtown airport is right on the edge of the neighborhood, meaning the sound of planes can often be heard. However, folks are more likely to depart from nearby Shreveport Regional Airport on their next getaway, about 15 to 20 minutes away. For more immediate travel, the area is served by Sportrans bus routes that stop along North Market Street and run to Southern University Shreveport.
