Whether you prefer to be at home or on the go, the Hyde Park-Brookwood-Southern Hills neighborhood has something for you. Only 11 miles from Downtown Shreveport, this quiet area is found along the outer edges of the city, making it a lovely cross between suburban and rural. Close to Interstate 49 and Highways 171 and 3132, the neighborhood offers easy access to Cross Lake or the Red River, both great spots for endless fun on the water. The comforts of this residential community are many, and once settled, people tend to want to stay. “Lots of people have been there for 15 to 20 years,” says local Realtor Telisa Tieuel with Palmer Hall Realty. “They don’t want to leave once they get here.”

Homes in the area are overwhelmingly traditional with only a few contemporary styles appearing among the tree-lined streets. Ranch-style residences are very common as are A-frame houses. Split levels and even a geo-dome home can be found throughout the area, and lawns are well cared for. Prices range from $108,000 for a house needing TLC to $375,000 for a dwelling with four bedrooms and three baths.

Students in Hyde Park-Brookwood-Southern Hills have their choice of parochial, private, and public schools. South Highlands Elementary is an academic and performing arts magnet facility rated among the top 65 best public elementary schools in Louisiana. Twice recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, the institution takes a hands-on problem-solving approach to learning with technology being integrated into the classroom beginning in kindergarten. Caddo Middle Magnet encourages students to grow and learn through the student council, national junior honor society, and athletics like golf, fencing and archery. Woodlawn Leadership Academy is a high school focused on respect and responsibility. In addition to cross country and basketball, the facility also features choir, band and photography club.

There’s green space throughout the neighborhood, and Southern Hills Park and Community Center is one of the most popular. It sponsors youth and senior programs at its on-site recreation center as well as offering after-school activities for students. The tennis center includes 10 courts and a pro shop while the larger park has multiple ball fields and a one-mile walking trail. Everyone can enjoy the swimming pool, and little ones will love the fenced playground. The gymnasium includes a fitness room, exercise equipment and computer training rooms.

Close by, Shreveport Dixie Baseball is a nonprofit made up of parents, friends and coaches dedicated to creating and maintaining some of the finest facilities and team organizations in Louisiana. Established in 1990, the group hosts leagues for boys and girls aged three to fifteen. It follows Dixie national rules all year and sponsors tournaments in the Fall. The volunteer-run group has built a complex of six fields, concession stands, an umpire dressing room and an office. The organization provides a family atmosphere and participates in a college scholarship program where one hundred $2,000 awards are given to Dixie players regardless of athletic ability.

When it’s time to eat, the neighborhood has more than a few dining options. Southern Classic Chicken has been family owned and operated for over 35 years. The company began expanding in 2019 and has become a regional chain with locations in three states. Favorite dishes include the classic meal combos, chicken and a roll, dipping sauces and side orders like Cajun rice or sweet corn grits.

Johnny’s Pizza House is a Louisiana classic. Begun in 1967, the regional chain helped make pizza popular throughout the state. The eatery offers muffuletta pizza, take-and-bake options and its famous Sweep the Kitchen pizza with 11 toppings. The restaurant also has community partnerships with the Alzheimer’s Association and participates in marches to raise funds for research.

Hyde Park-Brookwood-Southern Hills represents the best of suburban living. It’s close to the country and downtown, offering easy access to both whenever the mood arises.
