Waterfront living in Western Hills-Yarborough
Most homes in Western Hill-Yarborough are single-family homes in styles like ranches and contemporaries on lots that average more than a third of an acre. The neighborhood comprises winding, suburban streets with mature trees and plenty of cul-de-sacs. According to Zavarce, “That is an expensive area because the homes are on or within the vicinity of the lake, so those areas are very sought-after. Ultimately, you cannot replicate that land,” he says. House hunters can pick up a modest but move-in-ready home starting around $100,000, while lakefront properties can reach $1 million. There are also a handful of townhouse communities in the neighborhood that have sold for between $150,000 to the mid-$300,000s, with homes at the upper end of the price range located on the lake.Where to eat and drink in Western Hills-Yarborough
There are many conveniences in the neighborhood for homeowners, including Brookshire’s grocery store, Walmart Supercenter, and The Home Depot. For a bite to eat, chains are in high supply here, particularly where Pine Road meets Interstate 20. More local eateries include Ramirez Mexican Restaurant, known for its fresh food and great service, and Kumo Sushi, a Japanese restaurant that offers sushi and hibachi dishes.Residents can also head to a waterfront locale for dinner; some restaurants even have boat launches and boat ramps for people to stop in when they’re already out on the water. According to Zavarce, Orlandeaux’s Café is a popular one with residents, which may come as no surprise; the restaurant opened its doors in 1921 and is both the longest continuously-operating restaurant in Shreveport and the oldest continuously-operating African-American-owned restaurant in the United States. It’s famous for its Creole dishes like gumbo, po-boys, cobbler, and more.
Events in the neighborhood
According to Zavarce, one of the year's biggest events occurs on Cross Lake. “Every summer here on Cross Lake, they have something called Floatilla, which is when everybody and their mom brings out a boat and does a scavenger hunt and plays other games like that,” he says. Members of the Shreveport Yacht Club, which has been part of Shreveport’s history for nearly 100 years, can attend monthly and seasonal events, whether it be a boat race in the summer or a New Year’s Eve dinner in the winter. All residents can attend events regularly held at Bill Cockrell Metro Park’s community center, like bingo or holiday parties.
