Sierra Vista Estates
Large lots in the Chihuahuan Desert
Lot size is this neighborhood’s main draw. Though some properties have a half acre or multiple acres, most have roughly an acre. These yards are grassy in the winter and sandy in the summer, often dotted with mature trees. Set back on the lot, manufactured or site-built homes have some room from the street. They’re constructed any time between the 1960s and 2000s, so some need more renovations than others. Older homes with less square footage sell between $110,000 and $250,000. Properties with more updates and square footage are between $275,000 and $500,000. These rectangular homes usually have siding exteriors and low-pitched roofs, and attached carports are common. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.Hiking the Huachuca Mountains nearby
Compared to areas on the outskirts of Sierra Vista, Sierra Vista Estates is closer to the Huachuca Mountains. Trails are only a couple of miles from the neighborhood’s western side, and some of them scale thousands of feet in elevation. The Arizona Trail covers this range, too, and goes all the way from the U.S.-Mexico border to the Utah state line; this National Scenic Trail spans about 775 miles across the state. Garden Canyon Park is at the base of these mountains, though, and its nearly 15-mile trail is on flatter ground. This trail leads west to Brown Canyon Ranch, a pioneer property from the early 1900s. The ranch has an extensive trail network that leads up into the mountains, and its pond is home to the endangered Chiricahua leopard frog.Birds in a blink: Sierra Vista’s hummingbird population
Sierra Vista is the hummingbird capital of the United States. About 15 species of these birds, in addition to larger migratory birds, pass through Sierra Vista in the spring, and birdwatchers flock to the area. Headquartered about 5 miles south of Sierra Vista Estates, the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory hosts several bird-themed events throughout the year. Its hummingbird banding sessions happen from April to October, and visitors might get the chance to hold one of the tiny birds. Carr Canyon Owl Prowls happen two to four times between March and May; attendees go on a guided night hike to spot owls.Nearby restaurants and shopping centers on state Route 92
Some restaurants are along the neighborhood’s western side, clustered on state Route 92. Country House Family Restaurant is known for big breakfast portions and fast service. Down the street, Urbano Bar & Bistro started as a coffee shop and now serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. People often order the poke and bulgogi bowls, but the restaurant has everything from lattes to tacos. This small space also hosts weekly open mics, salsa nights and themed international dinners, and regulars often swing by. About 4 miles north of these restaurants, The Mall at Sierra Vista has more local restaurants and familiar chain stores. Sierra Vista’s other shopping centers are nearby with Walmart, Target and Fry’s Food and Drug.Huachuca Mountain Elementary events, Buena High career pathways
Just north of the neighborhood, Huachuca Mountain Elementary serves kindergarten through sixth grade and gets a B-plus from Niche. They have several events for students throughout the year, including Science Day, Leadership Day and Field Day. About 3 miles north of this campus, Joyce Clark Middle receives a B. Buena High is a few miles farther, in the city’s northeastern corner; it scores a B-minus. Its students can pick from 15 career technical education programs, ranging from culinary arts to health science.Driving around the desert: state routes 90 and 92
Some businesses are walkable on the neighborhood’s western side, but with few sidewalks and high summer temperatures, most people drive around this area. State Route 92 is a major north-south thoroughfare, leading to shopping centers and nearby towns. It goes about 30 miles southeast to Naco, Sonora, and the U.S.-Mexico border; it goes about the same distance to Bisbee. State Route 90 provides an alternative route to Bisbee, running along Sierra Vista’s northern side. Sierra Vista Transit buses also operate in that part of town but don’t provide service to Sierra Vista Estates. Tucson International Airport is about 75 miles northwest of the neighborhood via state Route 90 and Interstate 10.
