A rural Silver Spring community turned commuter hub
In the 1800s, Layhill was a rural community brimming with corn crops and dairy farms. But when highways like Maryland state Route 97 reached this small Silver Spring community in the midcentury, shopping centers, houses and recreational hubs filled the area’s rolling terrain. Today, this suburban convenience is the community’s main draw. “You can easily get to Baltimore, Annapolis and D.C. in under an hour if traffic is light because so many different commuter routes surround the neighborhood,” says Adam Chasen, a former Layhill resident and team lead of the Chasen Homes Team with Compass Real Estate. “You’ve got hiking trails, highly ranked schools and plenty of shopping. It’s just an easy way of life here.” Locals can also quickly drive to Wheaton, where they’ll find the Westfield Wheaton Mall and an eclectic array of eateries along its downtown strip.
Midcentury single-family homes and townhouses
Most single-family houses on Layhill’s winding roads were built between the 1950s and ‘70s. Colonial Revivals often sit on quarter- to half-acre lots covered in white oak and red maple trees. Asphalt driveways typically lead to two-car garages attached to split-levels and ranch-style houses. A few new traditional homes from the late ‘90s dot Punch Street. Buying in Layhill can cost between $550,000 and $750,000, a range similar to a Montgomery County home’s average $600,000 selling price. The neighborhood also has a few brick-façade townhouses with prices ranging between $350,000 and $550,000.
Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., are a quick commute away
Layhill Road eventually connects with Maryland state Route 97, making Washington, D.C., a 13-mile drive south. Drivers can also follow Maryland state Route 200 and Interstate 95 northeast for 30 miles to reach Baltimore. Annapolis is 40 miles away via Interstate 495 and U.S. Route 50. Numerous Montgomery County bus stops are also in the neighborhood. Less than 3 miles south, the Glenmont Metro station follows the Red Line, taking passengers to Union Station in about an hour. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is less than 40 miles south, and Dulles International Airport is equidistant to the west. MedStar Montgomery Medical Center is the closest hospital, 6 miles north.
A neighborhood shopping center and easy access to Westfield Wheaton mall
Plaza del Mercardo is a yellow, Spanish-style shopping strip at the intersection of Bel Pre and Layhill roads. Walking under the terra-cotta-tiled awnings, shoppers can pop into locally owned bakeries and florists and big-box stores like Aldi and CVS. Though Starbucks and McDonald’s surround the shopping center’s parking lot, Chasen says locals typically go out to eat in downtown Wheaton, 4 miles south of the neighborhood. “If you’re not going to make the trip to D.C. for a night out, then downtown Wheaton is your best bet for good restaurants and bars,” he says. An Irish and American flag wave atop The Limerick Pub, where patrons sip pints of Guinness as the brick fireplace crackles and folk musicians strum guitars. Down the street, outdoor seating surrounds the blue brick building of Hakuna Matata Grill, which serves Persian, Indian and Portuguese food. “Westfield Wheaton mall is in the same area, so Wheaton is where people go for the majority of their big shopping trips, too.” Escalators connect Westfield Wheaton’s two levels, home to stores like Costco, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target.
Youth sports, hiking and golfing in Layhill
Mid-County Community Recreation Center is in a brick-and-glass contemporary-style building on Queensguard Road. Inside, kids can shoot hoops during the basketball open gym times, while adults work out at the fitness center. Referee whistles fill the air during youth soccer games on the fields behind the center. In the same area, the asphalt-and-boardwalk Matthew Henson Trail runs for 4 miles, passing by rocky creeks and stretches beneath a dense canopy of silver birch trees that turn shades of orange and yellow every fall. West of the neighborhood, Argyle Country Club’s shingle-style clubhouse sits in front of its 18-hole golf course, which was a dairy farm in the early 1900s. Members can also access the club’s clay tennis courts and its lap-lane swimming pool.
Highly ranked Montgomery County Public Schools
Kids can attend prekindergarten through second grade at Bel Pre Elementary School, graded an A-minus by Niche, before going to B-plus-rated Strathmore Elementary School for third through fifth grade. They may continue to Argyle Middle School, which earns a B and has a magnet program for digital design and development. The middle school is in the neighborhood, but Chasen says most kids don’t walk to school. “Everybody takes the bus because there’s a lot of traffic and some busy streets. You don’t want your kid walking around that.” Lastly, students can attend the B-minus-graded John F. Kennedy High School, which offers Academy Programs in broadcast journalism, health-care professions and business administration. Nearby, the private Barrie School is a kindergarten through 12th grade school that gets an A-plus.
Layhill’s original church still stands
A few houses of worship are in the neighborhood, including the Christian Layhill Community Church on Bonifant Road and Miracle Temple Assembly of God on Woodwell Road. Victorian-style Oak Chapel United Methodist Church and its neighboring cemetery were built on Layhill Road in 1887.
