Historic homes and contemporary builds
As French notes, many homes in East Weatogue are well-regarded for their historicity. “Historic homes are mainly from the 1700s and along East Weatogue Street,” French says. “Because the town has designated that area a historic district, you have to abide by certain codes about how your house looks.” Many of these established homes follow Colonial and Georgian architectural designs. “On the ridgeline, there are homes from the 1980s, and some contemporary ones. They’re mainly on 2-3 acre lots.” These builds tend to follow New Traditional designs, with Georgian influences. Whatever the period, homes tend to be accompanied by detached garages and spacious, shady lots with well-manicured lawns. Houses don’t sell often in East Weatogue, but buyers can expect prices between $400,000 and $1 million, with historic homes closer to the lower end and contemporary homes closer to the upper end.
Recreation in East Weatogue
The Simsbury area isn’t short on recreational activities. A chain of parks, such as Penwood State Park, can be found along the Metacomet Ridge just east of the community. Penwood's 800 acres include numerous trails for hikers and bikers alike. Residents have plenty of local walking options as well, such as the Tanager Hill trail and the Drake Hill Flower Bridge. “There’s a committee that decorates the bridge with flowers during the summer,” French says. “A lot of people have weddings, or have wedding photos taken there.” For indoor recreation, residents can always hop on over to Big Sky gym and stretch their limbs there. And at Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center, residents can listen to the musical performances of local and national orchestras, among other ensembles.Exceptional schools that emphasize service
Kindergarten through sixth grade students can attend Tariffville School, which receives an A-minus rating from Niche. Students can then move on to Henry James Memorial School and Simsbury High School, which both earn A’s. Niche also ranks Simsbury High among the top 10% best public high schools in the state. Clubs and activities at Simsbury High include DECA, Woodshop and Hope for the Homeless, where students collect items for donation and volunteer at local soup kitchens.Simsbury Celebrates
Simsbury kicks off the holiday season with a bang, in the form of the Simsbury Celebrates festival. Trolley rides, s’mores, ice sculptures, selfies with Santa and more are staples of the celebration. The event concludes with a fireworks show. For more pastoral, summer activities, locals can visit Rosedale Farms. “It’s a winery with an organic fruit and vegetable farm, and they have wine tasting and events throughout the summer,” French says.

Few restaurants pair modern continental cuisine with colonial-era history the way Abigail’s Grille and Wine Bar does. Though the menu is contemporary, with offerings such as lobster pasta and rigatoni, some of the furnishings are old school, and the building is oldest of all. This former tavern was built around 1800 along the Boston-to-Albany Turnpike, which saw patrons such as George Washington and John Adams. Many claim the restaurant is haunted to this day by Abigail Pettibone, unfaithful wife of a whaling captain and namesake of the current establishment. If locals are hoping for a dining experience that’s more romantic than potentially spooky, they might instead visit Millwright’s, which serves locally sourced American fare and has some tables overlooking a waterfall. Fitzgerld’s Foods is just down the street, for when residents are in the mood to cook at home.
