Southwest Sioux Falls is a suburb with golf courses and craft dining

Known for its ancient cascading waterfalls and a vibrant craft dining scene on the riverbanks, Sioux Falls is a city growing toward the southwest, with impressive homes on large, well-maintained lawns. Within reach of golf courses, nature trails and numerous restaurants, Southwest Sioux Falls is a suburban neighborhood that offers an active lifestyle amidst quiet, midwestern streets. "It's the Midwest. People are friendly. They always help each other out and are kind to one another. It is very safe. Kids can walk to school and the park," says Sarah Ekholm, longtime resident and Realtor with Ekholm Team Real Estate. Ekholm says Southwest Sioux Falls is also in a convenient location. "It is close to amenities, great shopping malls and stores. We have great parks, and many of the school districts are highly rated, which brings a lot of people to the area."

Planned subdivisions and custom houses in gated communities

Neatly planned subdivisions have a network of interwoven streets lined by lush lawns and well-connected sidewalks. The neighborhood features a variety of architectural styles, including New Traditional and ranch-style homes, with prices ranging from $210,000 to $1.6 million. Homes at the top of the price range may reach 5,800 square feet and typically have spacious custom-built designs in gated communities like the Estates on Yankton Trail. Townhouses are anywhere from $220,000 to $790,000. "We're growing out. People can build and buy homes on the outskirts and still have the advantage of the city in a quieter area," Ekholm says.

Sioux Falls can experience winter storms and blizzards with single-digit temperatures and an average annual snowfall accumulation of around 45 inches. This region is located in the northern part of Tornado Alley, where tornadoes can form due to wind currents from the Gulf Coast mixing with air from the Rocky Mountains.

The golf course and a 19-mile trail with an aquarium

Platinum Valley Park has a walking trail, picnic shelters and a playground. Sertoma Park features family-friendly facilities, including a butterfly house and an aquarium with coral reefs and stingrays. Yankton Trail Park features multiple soccer fields and offers access to the Greenway Recreation Main Trail Loop, a 19-mile paved trail that connects to numerous parks along the Big Sioux River. The Bakker Crossing Golf Course is a par-71 golf course, known for its windy, open fairways. It is open to the public but offers clubhouse amenities exclusively to members.

Restaurants range from speakeasy-style taverns and Irish pubs

Just north of the neighborhood is the Empire Mall, with about 110 boutiques and restaurants. Residents can pick up groceries at Hy-Vee, and the Pomegranate Market has an inventory of organic goods. This community features a unique range of restaurants. The 22TEN Kitchen Cocktails has an atmosphere reminiscent of a creative speakeasy, offering signature dishes such as shrimp and grits or elk ravioli. Another popular establishment is kRav’N, a sports bar with casino games. McNally’s Irish Pub has a dog-friendly patio.

Public schools offer bilingual learning and JROTC tracks

There are multiple school district zones in the neighborhood. One of the main ones is the Sioux Falls School District, which includes magnet-style offerings and open enrollment, allowing students to attend schools outside their assigned zones. The district provides a two-way Spanish immersion program to help students become proficient in both Spanish and English, with coursework beginning at the elementary school level. Laura Wilder Elementary School earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Edison Middle receives a B. Roosevelt High scores a B-plus, with a JROTC track and hands-on STEM classes.

I-229 links the neighborhood to downtown and the airport

Sioux Area Metro offers public transportation, with bus stops located along 49th Street and Louise Avenue. State Route 115 and Interstate 229 are the main thoroughfares for residents to navigate the city. The neighborhood’s emergency room is the Avera Heart Hospital on 69th Street. Downtown Sioux Falls is approximately 8 miles north on I-229. Approximately 13 miles north, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport offers flights to U.S. cities, including Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta.
