Sissonville feels peaceful but well connected
Sissonville is a rural West Virginia community that offers countryside charm, without feeling too far from Charleston. Interstate 77 passes through the center of town, making it easy to commute around the region. There are rarely reasons to leave, though, as popular restaurants and stores line Sissonville Drive, and schools, jobs and health care are readily available in this small pocket of Kanawha County.
Countryside living with land and varied home styles
Ranch-style and split-level homes make up most of the inventory in the area, but you can also find some farmhouses and Colonial Revivals. The community is a good choice for buyers looking for more room than the city offers. “There’s a lot of homes with some land, so if you’re looking for that, there you go,” says Christina Pepper, a sales associate at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Professional Realty with nearly 20 years of experience. “You get a little more bang for your buck.” The median lot size in the area is just over a half-acre, and homes often sit along winding, hilly roads. If you’re looking for more of a subdivision or neighborhood vibe, you can find that, too, especially along Morecott Drive or White Oak Drive. For a home in Sissonville, you should expect to pay between the upper $60,000s and the lower $400,000s.
Homes in Sissonville range from classic ranch-style houses to new builds.

Youth sports, country clubs and library holiday parties for local fun
There is limited recreation in Sissonville, but there are still some options. Popular activities in the area include:
Teeing off for a round of golf at the private, par-71 Edgewood Country Club
Playing softball or baseball at the Sissonville Little League fields
Playing soccer at the Sissonville Soccer Fields near Sissonville Elementary School
Exploring the slides, swings and climbing structures on the playground at Flinn Elementary School
When the weather's not great for outdoor fun, the Sissonville Public Library offers ways to stay social. "The big holiday parties we have are very well attended. Usually, at Christmastime, we have Santa come and take pictures for free, and the local Women's Club comes and serves hot chocolate," says Cathy Mason, manager of the library. "We also have a program where local children can help us plant and then take care of our garden."
Quick commutes to major job centers
Interstate 77 passes through Sissonville and offers a quick commute to Downtown Charleston. “It’s no more than 10 to 12 minutes,” Pepper says. The drive down the highway is about 15 miles, and there is also a bus route that connects to the city, with stops along Sissonville Drive. You don’t have to go into Charleston for work, though. Niterra North America is a manufacturer of spark plugs that employs about 500 people and has a facility just off the interstate.
How the terrain impacts local flood risk
The Pocatalico River and Tupper Creek flow through the area, posing a flood risk to homes near the water. Properties that aren’t in designated flood zones are still at risk, though. Flash flooding can happen quickly in West Virginia, as the hilly terrain causes water to rapidly run off the slopes and into waterways. The county offers the Kanawha Alert app, which warns residents of emergencies, and has several online resources about flood preparedness.
