Rural community along the James River

Along the James River in Isle of Wight County, the quaint, independent community of Rushmere offers rural living just 10 minutes from shopping and dining in Smithfield. Colonized in 1634, the area played a role in both the American Revolution and Civil War, evident by its historical forts along the riverfront. Homes sit along country roads surrounded by miles of forest and farmland, and residents say they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We signed up for the country life, and that’s what we wanted,” says Wendy Plemmons, an associate broker and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices RW Towne Realty, who lives in Rushmere and has been selling homes in the area for 22 years. “If you were in the city and someone was going slow, you’d probably be annoyed. But you’re behind this tractor that’s six times the size of your vehicle, so I can’t help but just laugh at it.”

Diverse range of homes starting in the $200,000s

Homebuyers can find a wide range of homes here, including older farmhouses, sometimes from the early 1900s, ranch-style homes and newly constructed contemporary-style houses. There are sprawling properties sitting far off country roads, subdivisions with homes in cul-de-sacs and waterfront properties on the James that come with private boat docks. “There are houses that sit on 50 acres, and ones that sit on less than an acre,” says Plemmons. Older homes typically sell for $200,000 to $500,000, while newer houses usually go for $550,000 to $800,000. The CAP Index gives Rushmere a crime score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

The weather is like the rest of Virginia warm in the late spring, hot in the summer, warm early fall, and then freezing all winter.
