Young city with a vibrant downtown near Truist Park
Smyrna, known as "Jonquil City" for its springtime bloom of thousands of jonquils, is a growing community just over 10 miles from Atlanta. "Smyrna is a small, historic town with a mix of cool independent shops and popular chain stores," says Juli St George, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Intown Atlanta. The city combines a cozy downtown and access to Truist Park, one of the metro area's biggest cultural attractions. The development of Village Green and Market Village in the 1980s and '90s sparked what the city calls a "halo effect," inspiring similar commercial and residential growth around Smyrna. One of the most significant changes in the past decade was the relocation of the Atlanta Braves to Cobb County in 2013. "The arrival of Truist Park brought so much development and has become a major draw for recreation," St George says. Many residents work in Smyrna, as the area is home to Comcast's regional and Papa John's global headquarters. "There's a lot to do here, and we've seen many people move to Smyrna who work in tech or healthcare," she says.
With a population of over 56,000, Smyrna also offers convenient commutes to Buckhead and Midtown, along with easy access to major interstates. "The good thing about Smyrna is that Atlanta Road is the main artery running through town, and it leads directly to Midtown in about 20 to 25 minutes," says Matthew Baker, an associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway GA Properties with nearly 20 years of real estate experience.

Spacious lots, condos and new development close to downtown Smyrna
Smyrna's housing market has surged in recent years, with the median home price now at $466,500 and the average sales price rising 5% in the past year. "A few years ago, half-acre lots could be found for $250,000, but today they're under $500,000," St George says. Properties in Smyrna offer a mix of single-family houses, townhouses and condos. Residences north of downtown are well-established, with midcentury single-family homes costing around $400,000. Townhouses and condos from the 1970s to 1990s are typical in the northeastern part of the city. "You see a wealth of condos because Smyrna draws first-time homebuyers and young professionals looking to get away from the city," Baker says. Farther south, newer developments dominate, with homes from the 2020s reaching over $1 million.

Truist Park is home of the Atlanta Braves
Since the Atlanta Braves moved to Cobb County, they've become a big part of Smyrna's culture. Locals and visitors flock to Truist Stadium, a 41,000-seat venue, to cheer on the Braves during the MLB regular season from March to October. "We love going to Truist Park to catch a game," Baker says. "The stadium is next to The Battery Atlanta, a walkable, mixed-use development with great restaurants and sports bars." The 2.25-million-square-foot Battery remains popular year-round, attracting visitors with its vibrant nightlife. The Battery also features the Coca-Cola Roxy, which St George highlights as one of her favorite spots. "It's fantastic. It brings in a lot of big names and is surrounded by bars and restaurants," she says.

More dining and shopping at Village Green and Market Village
Downtown Smyrna has a culture and dining scene of its own. Village Green and Market Village's brick-lined streets form the heart of the city. At Village Green's park, the town hosts arts and crafts markets and the Culture and Spirit Festival, which celebrates Smyrna's birthday each September. At Market Village, locals can enjoy popular chains, intimate bars, local mainstays and a variety of shops.
Open-air concerts are often held in front of A. Maxwell Bacon City Hall, the central building of Market Village. The Smyrna Depot Farmers Market is open every Saturday through the end of September. The Jonquil Festival, each April, celebrates with live music, food and events.

Outdoor recreation along the Silver Comet Trail
Smyrna has over 29 parks and recreational areas. Burger Park, located in northern Smyrna, offers nearly four acres of lawns where dogs can run off-leash. Brinkley Park is just 4 miles from Truist Park and features baseball fields for kids to enjoy. Golfers can play at the semi-private, 18-hole Legacy Fox Creek Golf Course and Driving Range. The Silver Comet Trail begins in Smyrna and runs 62 miles westward to Alabama. In 2023, Cobb County and the nonprofit PATH Foundation started a project to extend the trail to the Atlanta Beltline. Once completed, the extension will directly connect Smyrna to one of Atlanta's most popular walking paths and shopping areas.

Easy interstate access and Smyrna's low crime rates
Smyrna residents have direct access to Interstates 75 and 285, both leading to Atlanta. The city is about 16 miles from downtown Atlanta and 25 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. I-75 and I-285 experience heavy traffic with some of the nation's worst bottlenecks, according to the American Transportation Research Institute. While having a car is a must, residents can also ride CobbLinc buses, many of which stop at Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train stations. Traffic in Smyrna can also become heavy during Atlanta Braves games.
Smyrna's crime rates are lower than those of surrounding cities in the Atlanta metro area. Overall, crime has decreased by about 30% since 2019, according to the 2023 annual report from the Smyrna Police Department. Police Chief Keith Zgonc highlighted a drop in violent crime from 2022 to 2023. The department also engages with the community through meet-and-greets, summer camps and annual citywide events.
Need to know
In 2019, Georgia Health News reported that Smyrna's ethylene oxide emissions were 27 to 81 times greater than the Acceptable Area Concentration Levels. Ethylene oxide is a carcinogen linked to lymphoma and breast cancer. Medical equipment sterilization company Sterigenics was identified as a major source of these high levels. In 2023, the company paid $35 million to settle nearly 80 cases but denied liability or that its emissions posed a public health threat. Since then, the EPA has proposed new ethylene oxide rules that are expected to reduce emissions by 80% annually.
