A tranquil village with auto repair shops and mountain views
Small homes on rural roads and panoramic views of the Allegheny Mountains define Grazierville, a slow-paced community just south of Tyrone. The village was created as a stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad line between Altoona and Tyrone in the late 1800s; the stop isn’t there today, though freight and passenger trains still frequently use the tracks east Grazierville. Transportation-related industries still have a strong presence in the community, as there are numerous auto repair shops and a salvage yard in the neighborhood. “It’s a nice, quiet place to live. A lot of people choose to raise families there,” says Jon Mozes, Director of Communications and Broadcasting for the Altoona Curve Baseball team. “Hunting and fishing are big parts of the culture.” Farmland, state-owned game land and nature preserves extend east and west of the neighborhood, encouraging residents to embrace a slow-paced, outdoor lifestyle.
Spacious lots with bungalows and mobile homes
Country roads are lined with smaller homes on spacious grassy lots. Most houses sit on at least a quarter to half an acre of land, and landscaping is minimal. Bungalows and workers’ cottages from the 1920s and ‘30s are priced between $50,000 and $130,000, depending on condition. Split-level houses from the late 20th century usually cost between $200,000 and $250,000. There are also manufactured mobile homes from the early 2000s; some include built-on additions like decks. Prices for these homes fluctuate between $100,000 and $170,000.

An Italian-themed amusement park, hiking trails and state game lands near Grazierville
While natural spaces surround Grazierville, the closest park isn’t outdoor-recreation-based. An Italian-themed amusement park called DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash Water Park is in Tipton, just under 3 miles from Grazierville. “The DelGrosso family, who are big pasta sauce producers, bought the park a few decades back and added the water park,” says Scott Reilly, an Altoona native. Parkgoers get sprayed with water from the Leaning Tower of Pisa water feature and float down the River Lazio. “If you’re used to Disney or Six Flags, it’s smaller than that. But you’d have to drive far to find anything like it, so it’s a big attraction to the area,” Reilly adds. Hunters often take advantage of their proximity to Pennsylvania state game lands, which can be found east and west of the neighborhood. In-season trapping and hunting are legal throughout the acres of forested land. Nearby, there are also nature trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Bell’s Gap Trail follows a former rail line that carried freight and passenger trains until it closed in 1938. A couple of miles north in Tyrone, there are public green spaces like Reservoir Park, which has a playground, walking trail and a basketball court for pickup games.

Reporting the "Eagle Eye News" at Tyrone Area High School
Kids may begin at Tyrone Area Elementary School, which has a B rating from Niche. Older students can progress to Tyrone Area Middle School and then to Tyrone Area High School, both of which earn B-minus ratings. The high school has several clubs to promote student engagement, including the ski club, which buses students to Blue Knob Ski Resort every Thursday, and “The Eagle Eye News,” a student-produced newspaper. “All of central Pennsylvania is huge into high school football,” Mozes says. “Since it’s a more rural area, the schools will travel further than you’d think to play other teams.” But during home games on fall Friday nights, the community packs the bleachers at Gray Veterans Memorial Field to cheer on the Tyrone Golden Eagles.
