There are only a few homes on the market in Solvay because people live here for generations. “You have grandparents that went to the same school as their grandchildren. It’s a very family-oriented place,” says Coldwell Banker Prime Real Estate Agent Terrance Bradley. Bradley is a local and raised his own children here. Considered a village, Solvay is walkable, and friendly faces are everywhere — especially at the local high school football games. Residents are only 3 miles from downtown Syracuse, surrounded by highways and on the eastern edge of Onondaga Lake where they can go boating and fishing.

Semi industrial
Industrial facilities also settle in Solvay and are sources of local employment. WestRock Paperboard Mill, on Industrial Drive, and Berry Global, a plastics plant on Milton Avenue, can be seen clearly from some neighborhood homes.
1930s homes
Many Solvay homes trace back to the 1930’s and while architecture varies — from ranch-styles to farmhouse-styles and the occasional Tudor revival — split-level minimal traditionals, American Foursquares and cozy bungalows are prominent. About half of Solvay’s properties are built close together in a grid-system; the other half settle in winding subdivisions where homes are comfortably spaced, and yards are larger. If a homebuyer wants a rehab project, their entry point may be around $70,000, but most homes range from $200,000 to $300,000 in Solvay. Roads and sidewalks have a worn-in feeling, with wavy patchwork and peeping weeds.

Home grown schools
The Solvay Union Free School District serves Solvay students. They take their first steps at Solvay Elementary School before moving on to Solvay Middle School and Solvay High School. The elementary and middle schools both earn a C rating from Niche while the high school scores a B plus. The high school has a dual credit program called “Success Academy” where they can earn anywhere from 24 to 60 credits toward college. Sixty credits awards students a Math/Science associate degree from Onondaga Community College.

Local bites and retail shops
Eva's European Sweets on Milton Avenue serves Polish classics, including 10 different types of Pierogis, and homemade desserts. Just a short walk away is Singers Karaoke Club — a popular place for pool, darts, singing and small bites. Bosco's Village Pub on Cogswell Avenue is where everyone heads for lunch, according to Bradley. For retail, Fairmount Fair, 2 miles away on Genesee Street, is a popular shopping strip with box chains like Marshall’s, Ulta, Target and Wegmans for groceries. Downtown Syracuse also has tons of restaurants and retail to choose from all within walking distance.

Plenty of team spirit
Since Solvay families have lived there for generations and gone to the same schools, it’s no surprise they’d rally during football season. According to Bradley, the biggest local event is gathering at the high school during game season, which lasts from the beginning of September to the end of October. “We also have a lot of bass tournaments at the lake. They happen every weekend all summer long,” Bradley says.

Getting around by car, bus or foot
Many neighbors can get places on foot — like local parks and schools. That said, the neighborhood isn’t 100 percent walkable, and a car is still important for everyday amenities. “Centro Bus Route runs through Solvay, taking you to the city, out to the county or anywhere you want to go,” Bradley says. The nearest airport, Syracuse Hancock International, is 8 miles away along Interstate 81. Solvay is also surrounded by Route 5 and 695, and Interstate 690.
