Somerset is a small city located 15 miles southwest of San Antonio, and just off State Highway 1604. It was founded at its current site in 1909, when the First Townsite Company was formed on the Artesian Belt Railroad. The discovery of an oil field in the 1920s triggered an initial population boom that ebbed during the Great Depression. Somerset was incorporated as a city in 1973 and has its own police department, post office and other government offices, but it’s still mostly a quiet, rural community.
“People like moving out to Somerset to live in the country, but still be close to San Antonio,” says Charles Kerr, broker/owner of Kerr Realty. With 38 years of experience under his belt, Kerr is the owner of the only realty office in the area. He’s also the owner of the only automatic carwash in Somerset, Texas Wash-N-Go. He explains that most people work in San Antonio, and make a 30-minute commute by car into the city. Most people who move out to Somerset want to own animals, and they need the space to do so. Some buy 5-to-10-acre tracts of land to build a house. Developers are also buying up land in the surrounding area. “We’re seeing more subdivisions pop up left and right,” says Kerr. In general, closing sale prices for homes fall between $300,000 and $400,000 for newer construction on less than an acre of land. Houses with more square feet of living space and more acreage are priced higher. Housing styles include established ranch-style houses and custom-built new construction with steep Tudor gables. There aren’t any sidewalks, even on residential streets closer to the busier parts of the city.
Students attend Somerset Elementary School, Savannah Heights Intermediate School, Somerset Junior High School and Somerset High School. Somerset High offers Career and Technical Education courses, including graphic production technologies. Eligible high school students can attend Shirleen Zacharias Early College Leadership Academy, graded B-minus on Niche.
Dollar General is close by, and Lowe’s Market is in the area for grocery shopping. The H-E-B in Lytle is also an option. If you’re commuting to San Antonio for work, you can make a stop for shopping on your way home. Just off State Highway 1604, Constantino’s Pizza is the place to go for pizza and pasta dishes, like chicken alfredo. Farther west on this road is Vallarta Grill, where you can get classic Mexican fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Spend time outdoors at Schimmel Memorial Park. Picnic and relax under the shade of the large pavilion. Kids can burn off extra energy on the playground, hop on the animal-themed spring riders or take a spin on the merry-go-round. You can also get your steps in on the walking trail. On hot days, cool off in the nearby community swimming pool.
Somerset is growing as more subdivisions start going up, but for now, it’s a quiet area. “It’s a friendly town,” says Kerr. “Everybody gets along.” If you want quiet country living 30 minutes from San Antonio, Somerset is the place for you.
