Industry among high-rises in Somerville
The Inner Belt is a largely industrial and commercial neighborhood just outside Boston in Somerville. Despite not feeling very residential, the community features walkability to trains on the Green Line into Boston, access to Interstate 93 and quick walks or bike rides to extensive shopping and dining nearby on Broadway and in Assembly Row. Plus, the neighborhood is home to the Brickbottom Artists Building, where many local artists live and exhibit their work. “It offers a lot of opportunity,” says Jesse MacDonald, a Realtor at Gibson Sotheby's International Realty in Charlestown. “It still has that light commercial, light industrial feel; it’s a bit gritty, for lack of a better word. But some new multifamily apartment buildings are under completion there.” He says that locals may see more redevelopment in the area in years to come, as many real estate developers look to capitalize on underutilized space.
Split between commercial and industrial, the urban landscape of Inner belt is growing fast, bringing constant new developments.

Area condos include the Brickbottom Artists Building
High-rise condos and apartment buildings make up the neighborhood's housing. One- and two-bedroom units have sold for between $500,000 and $950,000. The Brickbottom Artists Building is perhaps the most notable condo building in the Inner Belt. Originally a warehouse, it was redeveloped in the 1980s into affordable housing units for artists. “Many people stay for years, and units here rarely open up,” says Jessica Hall, local Realtor at Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty in Cambridge. The building is also home to gallery spaces where the Brickbottom Artists Association hosts events and exhibitions. The Brickbottom Gallery and its affiliate studios present the work of resident and nonresident artists throughout the year. Events include lectures, artist talks and receptions for rotating collections.

Retail and dining on Broadway and in Assembly Row
Most of the Inner Belt consists of office and industrial space. “Construction, trucking, it’s all still there,” MacDonald says. “When you start to pan out, it makes sense why it would redeveloped, but it will take time.” But while there isn’t much shopping or dining in the neighborhood yet, residents are a quick walk or bike ride away from local establishments like Tavern at the End of the World. This casual hangout spot on Cambridge Street serves curry fries, wings, sandwiches and drinks. Just a bit north, Broadway Street is lined with more restaurants and was recently expanded with new bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
Assembly Row along the Mystic River has a Trader Joe’s and upscale shopping at chains like Sephora and Lululemon a mile north as well. Once the site of a Ford car plant, Assembly Row sat vacant for years on the waterfront. “It was bleak and underdeveloped, but it was purchased, and they established more retail and restaurants,” MacDonald says. “We live a mile away and use that area once or twice a week now.”
Tavern at the End of the World is the local watering hole for many locals around the Inner Belt area.

Local dog parks and biking to nearby parks from Inner Belt
Dog parks dot the area, and Zero New Washington Dog Park is in the center of the neighborhood, across the Street from BluePearl Pet Hospital. “It’s great to have BluePearl, a lot of people in Charlestown and Somerville bring their pets there,” says Grace Bloodwell, a real estate broker at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Charlestown. "It’s a big need because there are so many dogs." Although there isn’t much green space in the neighborhood, designated bike lanes connect cyclists to nearby parks like Cambridge Crossing, just south, and Foss Park, just north. Cambridge Crossing has picnic areas and a walking loop around a small pond, while Foss Park has athletic fields, an outdoor pool and tennis courts.
The Zero Washington Dog Park is a favorite spot to enjoy a day out for many Inner Belt locals and their pets.

The Orange Line and new Green Line Extension connect Boston commuters
Interstate 93 borders the Inner Belt, connecting drivers directly to Boston and beyond. The neighborhood is also well-connected to the region’s public transportation, with the opening of the Green Line Extension in 2022 drastically improving transit access to Boston for Somerville residents. East Somerville Station, on the neighborhood’s western edge, was one of six new stations that opened through the project. Sullivan Square on the Orange Line is also a short walk east of the neighborhood. Bloodwell explains that medical professionals and commuters on their way to the financial district ride the Orange Line to Massachusetts General Hospital and the city center. Boston Logan International Airport is also 5 miles east.
Locals of Inner belt can hop on the Orange Line and head from Assembly Row to Oak Grove.
