Youthful energy and recent improvements
The St. Joseph River runs alongside Howard Park-East Bank in downtown South Bend, reflecting the neighborhood's energy, excitement and renewal. Historic buildings host new stores and restaurants, and a renovated riverside park attracts people to be active and connect. The developing neighborhood has many college graduates and advanced degree holders – almost twice the national average – and fewer people over 65 than surrounding neighborhoods. Whether it's the youthful energy of the neighborhood that led to its recent changes or the other way around, "There is a positive vibe overall, and it's a great place to live," says Daniel Lichty, communications manager for St. Joe County Public Library. "There are a lot of people heavily invested in the area and want to see it reach its full ceiling of potential."

Howard Park and the East Bank Trail
Two destinations for outdoor activity give the neighborhood its name: Howard Park and the East Bank Trail. Howard Park was renovated in 2017 and is now downtown South Bend's premier park, with over 13,000 square feet of rubberized play space, open fields and attractions. "It's fantastic," Lichty says. "One thing they do is have an ice-skating trail in the winter that winds around the park. There are fire pits, a hot chocolate stand and an attached restaurant." The East Bank Trail is along the St. Joseph River's eastern banks, spanning the neighborhood and continuing into the City of Mishawaka. The trail passes Niles Avenue Dog Park and is popular amongst bikers, rollerbladers and runners.

Views of the St. Joseph River from home
Howard Park-East Bank combines old and new with historic homes from the early 1900s and new developments from the past 10 years. Of the older, single-family homes, Victorians and American Foursquares can reach up to $415,000. Still, most fall between $130,000 and $230,000 in price. Townhouses and single-family homes from a 2019 development in the neighborhood's southernmost section fetch a much higher price, bringing up the area's median to be higher than the South Bend Metro median. The homes, some of which have an unobstructed view of the St. Joseph River, sell between $575,000 and $730,000 and have New Traditional and Modern Craftsman designs.

Bike lanes go to Notre Dame
Getting around without a car is possible thanks to ample sidewalks, bike trails and bus lines. In addition to the East Bank Trail, bike lanes are available, with one leading directly north to the University of Notre Dame's campus. Others lead across the river to employers in downtown South Bend's western half. The University of Notre Dame is the city's largest employer and is 1 mile north, while Memorial Hospital is less than a mile west. South Bend International Airport is 4 miles away.
The area sees about 30 inches of snow annually. "The closer you are to Lake Michigan, the worse it is, but the last several winters have been very mild – maybe one to two large storms," Lichty says. There is some flooding in the neighborhood along the riverbank, but homes are mostly unaffected.
An old sheet metal warehouse made new
Howard Park-East Bank is among the most walkable and bike-friendly neighborhoods in South Bend, in part due to nearby eateries, stores and markets. More than 15 locally owned restaurants, bars and coffee shops are in the neighborhood, including The Lauber. Originally a sheet metal company and manufacturer from 1890 to 2015, the building is home to a popular restaurant with historic touches, like the big windows and glass garage doors. During warm months, the doors open to combine the indoor and outdoor dining areas. Trader Joe's is on North Eddy Street, which continues northeast to extensive shopping on Grape Road. Purple Porch Food Co-op is within walking distance of most homes and is where locals stock up on fresh produce and pantry staples.

Rowing activities at East Race Waterway
Beginners, kayakers and rafters get out on the East Race Waterway, North America's first-ever artificial whitewater course. Dams and obstacles control flow in the river's man-made channel to change the course's difficulty, and rapids can surpass 6 feet in height. Notre Dame's crew team practices on the river, launching from the boathouse at the neighborhood's southern end. Notre Dame has no shortage of activities like Fighting Irish football games, on-campus theater performances and seminars that are open to the public.
