Seaside seclusion in Cow Yard/Nonquitt

During the 19th century, area artists were drawn to the Cow Yard/Nonquitt area of South Dartmouth because of the spectacular scenery, the abundant natural light and the sense of seclusion that the peninsula offered. Over time, the artist’s colony that developed was replaced by wealthy New Englanders who built summer homes here for the same reasons that attracted artists. “It’s what you would call a true summer community,” says Realtor Ellie Wickes, who has been representing transactions in the area for more than 20 years. “People there enjoy playing golf and tennis or going sailing.” But arguably the area’s most prominent feature is, ironically, it’s relative obscurity. Cow Yard/Nonquitt has been called one of New England’s best-kept secrets, and residents here like to keep a low profile. And while much of the area retains its original ethos of summer community, many of the newer homes being built here are designed for year-round living, as buyers discover the natural beauty the area possesses in all seasons, not to mention its proximity to major urban areas.

At home in Cow Yard/Nonquitt

Homes in Cow Yard/Nonquitt don’t often come up for sale. “There are a lot of families who have owned houses there for a long time,” says Wickes. “They pass their houses down through the generations.” But when houses do come up for sale, they come with a premium: The median price of real estate here is over $1 million, and buyers can expect to pay around $660 per square foot on average. As seems fitting for a neighborhood such as this one, homes tend to be on the larger side, with an average size of nearly 2,500 square feet. That said, there are smaller homes scattered throughout, and buyers can find New England-style saltboxes and ranch-style homes in the $600,000 -- $800,000 range. Larger homes – especially those with water views and private beach access – can cost anywhere from $1 million to $7.5 million.

Indoor and outdoor recreation in Cow Yard/Nonqitt

One of Cow Yard/Nonquitt’s greatest assets is its abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Those who live here champion the idea that while the area is secluded, it’s not completely devoid of things to do. Quite the opposite, in fact. The private Nonquitt Beach is accessible only by those who live in the neighborhood, and Round Hill Beach is closed to non-Dartmouth residents beginning in late June. Both beaches front Buzzards Bay and feature long stretches of sand that are kissed by gentle waves, making them perfect for family outings. But because of the somewhat isolated location of the neighborhood, these beaches tend to be less crowded than those closer to New Bedford or Dartmouth.

Those who prefer to stay more inland can tee-off at the 9-hole Round Hill Community Golf Club, known for its challenging layout and captivating views of the Atlantic. Nature lovers have their own spaces, too, at the Peter’s Creek Reserve, a 29-acre area with a trail that winds along salt marsh, small islands and riparian forest habitats. The walking path is flanked by benches throughout to allow visitors to relax and take in the scenery. Dike’s Creek Reserve in the northern part of the neighborhood is 77 acres of former farmland that features salt marsh, swamp and wooded habitats, with 2 miles of trails covering the area.

And for indoor entertainment, residents here take in a show at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, also known as The Z. Launched in 1923, this popular gathering place in New Bedford underwent a $1.1 million restoration in 2014 and continues to host shows that include Broadway musicals, symphonies, and comedy shows.

Dartmouth schools

Dartmouth Public Schools earns an overall rating of B-plus from Niche. Joseph Demello Elementary and Dartmouth Middle School both earn a B-plus, and Dartmouth High School earns an A-minus. “Dartmouth High School is a big draw for people moving to the neighborhood because it’s such a good school,” says Wickes. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, students at Dartmouth High School have the opportunity to play 27 different varsity-level sports and the school has a very active fine arts program. Alternatively, parents can avail themselves of some of the nation’s best private schools, including nearby Tabor Academy, which earns an A-plus from Niche.

Restaurants and retail a short drive away

While Cow Yard/Nonquitt’s seclusion is part of its appeal, that same quality means that residents here do need to plan on driving a few miles for shopping and dining. Shaw’s is the closest grocery store, and it’s a little over 6 miles north on Route 6. For home necessities and other shopping, Target is 10 miles north on State Road in Dartmouth. For more comprehensive shopping, residents can head to the Dartmouth Mall, which is about 8 miles away, or to downtown New Bedford, a 7-mile trip.

For a casual, quirky bite to eat, residents can stop in at Davoll’s General Store, the oldest operating general store in the United States. Featuring an assortment of offerings – old-fashioned penny candy, books, local artwork, fresh produce and hand-dipped candles are just a few of the goods available for purchase at Davoll’s – this throwback retail destination also features a pub and café, which serves coffee, charcuterie, New England clam chowder and draft beer. For a slightly more upscale dining experience, locals prefer to make the 7-mile trip to the Black Whale Co-Op in New Bedford, where the menu features local seafood that celebrates the area’s Portuguese influences and the views of the Acushnet River provide a scenic backdrop.
