Thornwood
Thornwood’s clubhouse amenities and neighborhood trails
The Thornwood Sports Core—a $3.8 million clubhouse—anchors the south end of the community. “They have a pool, a clubhouse, basketball courts and they just put in pickleball,” says Dawn Recchia, Realtor with @Properties and former Thornwood resident. “They host volleyball leagues and other clubs for the community using the facilities.” Walkers and bikers can head straight from the parking lot to a trail encircling the central reservoir out back, or head farther west to the Mid-Country Trail and Silver Bend Bike Trail that trace Otter Creek. Several neighborhood playgrounds are around the bend from residential streets, like Stowell Peddy Park, Thornwood Grove Park and Gazebo Park provide playgrounds around the bend from homes at different corners of the community.A South Elgin community with St. Charles schools
Though Thornwood is located in South Elgin, students are zoned for St. Charles Community Unit School District No. 303. "You get a little more house for your money in a South Elgin address, but you’re right across the street from St. Charles,” Recchia says. “There’s even a walk-to elementary in the neighborhood itself.” Corron Elementary School scores an A grade on Niche and is ranked No. 2 for Best Public Elementary Schools in Kane County by the site. Wredling Middle School also scores an A. Students can finish their education at St. Charles North High School, a Blue Ribbon school which scores an A-plus and provides off-campus dual credit courses with the Illinois Math and Science Academy and Brown University for Grades 10 through 12. North Stars can try out for 35 sports teams, from football and lacrosse to water polo, badminton, bass fishing and bowling.Semi-custom and custom in Thornwood, townhouses in Thornwood Grove
Neat sidewalks line both sides of the street in Thornwood, located south of McDonald Road, and Thornwood Grove to the north. Medium-growth trees planted during the community’s development between 1998 and 2005 provide shade in the summer and colors in fall. “There were nine different builders who worked in Thornwood, and there are many levels—tract homes, semi-custom and custom,” Recchia says. “It’s not cookie-cutter at all.” Most options in Thornwood proper take on New Traditional, Cape Cod or colonial-style influences with two- to three-car garages and neat shrubbery within homeowners association guidelines. Many include brick fronts with vinyl siding, and most have space for a patio extension or in-ground pool in the backyard. Options here range from $600,000 to $800,000 depending on the number of rooms and amount of yard space, as homes on a cul-de-sac are afforded more. The neighborhood’s Thornwood Grove subdivision was built at the same time, with townhouses joined at the doorway, front-gabled roofs and two car garages ranging from $250,000 to $335,000. Both halves include access to the Sports Core and other amenities.Randall Road’s next-door neighbors
Some residents are within eyeshot of the South Elgin Commons and Silver Glen Crossing shopping centers when they sit on their back porches. “It’s all literally connected to the neighborhood,” Recchia says. “Kids can ride their bike to Target or McDonalds and parents feel safe letting them since it’s so close.” L.A. Fitness, Target and TJMaxx all have locations on this portion of the busy Randall Road corridor, as well as big-box grocers like Jewel-Osco and Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Market. National chains like Chili's are joined by local digs like Honey Berry Pancakes and Cafe and Chicagoland picks like Portillo’s. Residents grab a drink at the bar or snag a table on the outside patio at The Village Squire South Elgin, an English-style tavern. “It’s a nice big place right at the front, and the owner lives in Thornwood, so people like to support him,” Recchia says. South Elgin Commons also added an Advocate Outpatient Center location in 2024, which provides primary care, imaging, and other services closer to home and saves the trip to Ascension Saint Joseph - Elgin, 6 miles away.Traveling throughout Chicagoland via Metra or I-95
The Elgin, National St. and Geneva Metra stations serve the Thornwood community for the 44-mile trip to downtown Chicago. “A lot of people work downtown and take the train, but a very good amount also work in the Rosemont area,” says Recchia. The latter is about 37 miles away, directly adjacent to the Chicago O’Hare International Airport terminal. Drivers take Interstate 95 or state Route 25 to Interstate 290 to reach the Windy City.Social Committee events, Thornwood Thunder swim meets and more
The Thornwood Homeowners Association hosts events from the central clubhouse area for residents. “There’s a big Pumpkin Frolic where vendors bring food and games and everyone dresses up,” Recchia says. “They do events year-round like cookies with Santa and an Easter egg hunt in the spring.’ The neighborhood’s very own Thornwood Thunder swim team competes against surrounding communities and teaches multiple age groups from the community pool. And Thornwood is within 7 miles of events in walkable downtowns along the Fox River, from jam-packed Nightmare on Chicago Street in Elgin to the Electric Christmas Parade in St. Charles.
