Newly built homes just outside South Atlanta
The area that is now Ben Hill has been in Atlanta for nearly 200 years, but it remains modern with its homes, recreation and businesses. Atlantans have lived in the area since the 1820s, but the community gained a new life after the Civil War when it was named after U.S. Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. The senator’s popularity rubbed off on the neighborhood, and the new name brought an influx of residents. The neighborhood is now part of South Fulton and is close to the city’s most prominent sporting fields, performance venues and churches. Ben Hill’s newly built family homes and access to a private golf course draw new residents, particularly young professionals, to the area.
Modern Ben Hill homes outsize the rest of Atlanta
Almost all the homes in Ben Hill are New Traditional single-family homes or townhouses from the 2000s and 2010s. Single-family homes range from $300,000 to $600,000, while townhouses are typically between $230,000 and $260,000. These prices align with the rest of the city, but family homes in Ben Hill are 2,500 to 4,000 square feet, making them larger than other Atlanta properties. “You get a pretty good bang for your buck because you get a bigger house for the same price,” says Donald Cook, an agent with Pro Realty who has lived in South Fulton for 15 years. “This area is booming because we have a lot of young professionals buying their first homes.” The CAP Index Crime Score for Ben Hill is 3 out of 10, just below the national average score of 4.
Roadside eats on Campbellton
Campbellton Road is the central spot for locally owned restaurants. Ben Hill Grill serves cheesesteaks, wings and fried fish by the roadside, while Bamba Cuisine down the street specializes in authentic Senegalese food and Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Restaurant dishes up fresh oxtail and jerk chicken. On the other side of the community, St. James Live on Butner Road opens in the evenings with a full bar and nightly jazz and blues shows that showcase the best of the city's music scene. “The music is everything, because Atlanta has always had something to say, in the words of Outkast,” says Stevette Dukes, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has been selling homes in Atlanta since 2017. Camp Creek Marketplace is the closest shopping center, about 3 miles away. The marketplace is split into two parts, each with grocery stores like Target and Publix, clothing shops and salons.
Piedmont Driving Club’s private golf course
The area’s main public parks, Ben Hill Recreation Center and Deerwood Park, are along Fairburn Road and have walking paths and baseball fields. The street also has two of the area’s longest-operating churches. Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church was founded in 1824, making it the first Methodist church in the county. Ben Hill Methodist Church was established almost a century later, in 1918. Piedmont Driving Club is another prominent feature of Ben Hill. The private golf course on Camp Creek Parkway is a companion to Piedmont Driving Club’s main clubhouse next to Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta.
Wolf Creek Amphitheater, built for the Atlanta Olympics
The neighborhood is 5 miles from the Wolf Creek Amphitheater and Tom Lowe Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays Range off Camp Creek Parkway. Both venues were built for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and remain mainstays of South Fulton. Tom Lowe is a competition-grade range that still hosts national and international competitions, while Wolf Creek Amphitheater holds concerts, film festivals and South Fulton’s annual Juneteenth celebration.
College and career prep at Therrell High School
Ben Hill is part of Atlanta Public Schools. Local schools like Deerwood Academy — which covers kindergarten to fifth grade — Ralph Bunche Middle School and Therrell High School all earn C ratings from Niche. All three schools are International Baccalaureate World Schools, focusing on leadership skills and college prep. Therrell High School also offers career-focused programs in health science and public policy. Mercer University Douglas, known for its engineering program, is about 10 miles from Ben Hill.
Less than 10 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Camp Creek Parkway connects Ben Hill to the rest of South Fulton and surrounding suburbs like Union City, while Interstate 285 is the fastest route into Atlanta. Downtown is about 16 miles from the neighborhood, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is 8 miles away. There are Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) stops on Fairburn and Butner roads and two MARTA subway stations at the airport and College Park. The two nearest hospitals are Southwest Atlanta Hospital and Parkview Medical Center in West Atlanta, about 3 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
