The heart of outdoor recreation is South Gate Park, a nearly 100-acre space with plenty to do. The paved walking trail flows past the softball and baseball fields, tennis courts and basketball courts. You can also visit the South Gate Park Sports Center or the South Gate Senior Center. Residents on the other side of the Los Angeles River live closer to the Hollydale Regional Park, where a walking trail connects to amenities like the dog park and racquetball court. The Los Angeles River Trail runs through the area on a paved route extending south toward Long Beach.
South Gate sits along Interstates 105 and 710, connecting drivers to downtown Los Angeles, Los Angeles International Airport and the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. For local travel, the city operates the Get Around Town Express bus system, which runs multiple routes linking shopping centers, parks and the El Camino College South Gate campus. Several Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus lines also serve the area, offering connections to Downtown LA and other communities throughout LA County.
Most of South Gate is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District, but a small portion falls in the Downey Unified School District. There are schools in the community, like Tweedy Elementary School, which gets a B-minus from Niche.
