South Glastonbury Historic District
Colonial-era homes and some newer builds
Homes in the South Glastonbury Historic District are primarily in small subdivisions or along well-traveled roads, lending a more suburban feel compared to Glastonbury’s more rural neighborhoods. Colonial homes dating to the 1700s and early 1800s branch off of Main Street and sell for between $500,000 and $800,000. though they rarely come on the market. Not all houses in the district are historic, though. Options also include Cape Cods built in the 1920s and priced between $300,000 and $500,000, condos from the 1980s and 2000s between $400,000 and $800,000, and new builds with two-car garages ranging from $800,000 to $1 million.Glastonbury schools earn high marks
Children in the neighborhood typically begin at Nayaug Elementary School before progressing to the Gideon Wells School for sixth grade and Smith Middle School for seventh and eighth grades. All three schools earn A grades from Niche. Glastonbury High School receives an A-plus rating from Niche, which also ranks it as the third best high school for athletes in the state, with a new strength and conditioning center set to open in January 2025.Local restaurants and institutions along Main Street
The neighborhood is home to South Glastonbury Public Library, the Glastonbury Fire Department and three churches that operate alongside local businesses on Main Street. Sayulita serves creatively curated Mexican dishes like adobo seared swordfish tacos and lobster enchiladas alongside margaritas and other cocktails. “Just about every evening, people line up to get in at Sayulita a half hour before it opens,” Finer says. Just across the street, So. G Coffee Roasters is a cozy, locally owned cafe with a selection of coffee drinks, pastries and bagels. Brookside Market has groceries, though a quick drive north to Glastonbury Center leads to a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s, as well as more restaurants.Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry and Cotton Hollow Preserve
The historic district is surrounded by farmland and preserved natural space throughout the town. Just west of the neighborhood along the Connecticut River is the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry, the oldest continuously operated ferry in the country. “People will go over for a pleasure ride,” Finer says. Among several popular hiking trails is Cotton Hollow Preserve. The 80-acre site has fishing and swimming spots in Roaring Brook and paths through the woods beside ruins of an early-19th-century cotton mill. Roaring Brook also passes through the neighborhood, putting some homes in a flood zone. Hollister Preserve is nearby as well, with a hiking trail offering views of Hartford’s skyline from the top.Events at the Welles-Shipman-Ward House
The circa-1755 Welles-Shipman-Ward House has Connecticut and Glastonbury history on display in its preserved Colonial-era mansion and grounds. Here, visitors can take tours or attend events held by the Historical Society of Glastonbury, which include Victorian teatime with guests in period garb and seasonal gatherings with tastings of Colonial dishes. Glastonbury hosts many town-wide events as well, such as the weekend-long Apple Harvest and Music Festival in October with amusement rides, a 5K race, an apple-pie booth and more.Driving to Hartford and hospitals nearby
Drivers can get to downtown Hartford, 10 miles north, via Route 2, which also connects to other major roads, including Interstates 91 and 84. The district is about 12 miles from Hartford Hospital and Manchester Memorial Hospital, and Bradley International Airport is about 24 miles north. The South Glastonbury Historic District has the lowest possible CAP Index crime score of 1, compared to the national average of 4.
