South Hill consists of planned developments, many of which feature a classic Pacific Northwest Contemporary look. Homes sport stone finishes, cedar siding and Craftsman-inspired gables and porches. The area also has established ramblers and split levels with tree-lined yards that promote privacy among neighbors. Condos and town houses are also common, as well as properties exclusively meant for 55-plus communities. Young children can attend Edgerton Elementary School, which has a B-plus rating on Niche. The school offers students AVID courses that focus on building critical thinking skills. At Stahl Junior High, which earns a B on Niche, students can participate in many associated student body clubs, including chess, guitar and meditation. Rogers High School serves a large population of local high students and earns a B rating from Niche. The school boasts a yearly college and career summit with college admission representatives, apprenticeship representatives, FAFSA aid and college application workshops.
Residents maintain an active lifestyle at all the parks available to the community. Bradley Lake Park is a go-to spot just north of South Hill, encompassing over 60 acres of rolling hills, woodlands and a freshwater lake. Kids can play in the play area, and adults can fish on the pier or go on a morning jog on the paved trails that encircle the lake. South Hill Community Park is more of an after-school favorite, offering many of the same amenities as Bradley Lake Park on a smaller scale. At Meridian Habitat Park and Community Center, also known as the Puyallup Amphitheater, mossy woodlands house winding trails, a community center and a large grassy field where regular community events are held. Visitors can attend an outdoor exercise class, catch a movie screening or let their pups make furry friends at the off-leash dog park. Four miles away, the Puyallup Fairgrounds is home to the Washington State Fair. Locals head to the fairgrounds every September to hop on classic thrill rides, tour various expos, check out blue-ribbon farm animals and dig into a sugar-covered funnel cake.
Meridian Avenue, which runs through the heart of South Hill, is the area’s retail and dining hub. “Everything is based off Meridian as far as grocery stores, places to shop, restaurants, you name it,” says Dean Pierce, a John L. Scott Real Estate agent who has sold South Hill homes before. “It’s also the area's major north-south thoroughfare and gateway to Mount Rainier, though that is still an hour's drive away.” In the mornings, locals swing by Anthem Coffee & Tea at Sunrise Village. This hip coffee shop specializes in espressos and offers a menu full of creative flatbread pizzas. For lunch or dinner, Karma Indian Cuisine and Lounge is a family-run establishment offering a variety of flavorful and traditional Indian dishes. In the evenings, residents can relax with a pint at Rainier Growlers, a brewpub where friends can come together to play board games or watch sports. Safeway, Target and Walmart are top choices for weekly groceries and everyday items. South Hill Mall is also off Meridian Avenue. This 1 million square foot shopping mall has 120-plus stores and restaurants, as well as entertainment options such as Round 1 Bowling and Amusement. Round 1 offers bowling, billiards, arcade games, karaoke and a bar where residents can spend a weekend night out.
Pierce Transit serves South Hill as the primary public transportation service. The neighborhood is also located south of Washington State Route 512, connecting commuters to larger cities like Puyallup and Greater Tacoma. The closest airport residents can travel from is King County International Airport, 33 miles away, but Pierce County Airport is located at South Hill's southern end. While there’s the potential for increased noise in the area due to air traffic, Pierce says, “locals barely notice it’s even there. Only small-engine aircraft fly in and out of the airport, so there’s not much noise to complain about.”
