A suburb within an industrial city

Drexel Highlands took root in the early 20th century around South Milwaukee's growing industrial economy, attracting German and English immigrants pursuing the American dream. The neighborhood, characterized by its quiet suburban streets and working-class spirit, formed around the desires of these people and the generations that followed them. South Milwaukee is still an industrial center, home to a Caterpillar manufacturing facility, one of the area's top employers, and Bucyrus-Erie mining equipment factory, which was acquired by Caterpillar in 2011.

Homes developed between the 1920s and '60s

The neighborhood has a flat terrain with sidewalk-lined streets, so it's common to see people taking evening strolls. Some homes have paved driveways that access detached garages, and some backyards have patios, gardens and above-ground pools. Drexel Highlands is made up of 1920s American Craftsman styles, 1920s two-story wood-frame houses, 1940s bungalows and mid-century ranch styles that sell for between $190,000 and $310,000. "Since a lot of these homes are older, people like to move in and fix them up themselves," says Realtor Martin Larson, who sells property in South Milwaukee with Coldwell Banker Homesale Realty. A wastewater treatment facility is less than 2 miles east of the neighborhood. "The sewage treatment plant can cause a smell, depending on the wind," Larson says.
