Home to Milwaukee County’s oldest park
Historic Grant Park has been part of South Milwaukee since before it was a city, but much of its value is tied to Grant Park, Milwaukee County's oldest park. Dating back to 1910, the park is a significant destination for the community and the entire city. Its sweeping acres of natural woodlands, recreational facilities and Lake Michigan beach access are loved by locals and visitors, generating much of the city's tourism outside of downtown. Residents are within walking distance of several access points and find reasons to visit throughout the year. Historic homes sit along quiet streets that feel set apart from the rest of the city without compromising access to the highway and downtown business corridor.

Natural land and Lake Michigan access in the suburbs
Grant Park stretches across the entire neighborhood, spanning nearly 400 acres. "It's a secret gem in the Milwaukee County parks system that some people still don't know about," says Leah Minue, president of Growing South Milwaukee. "I just can't even believe that there's this place in the middle of a suburb where you can detach from society altogether for a couple of minutes." The Seven Bridges ravine trail is one of the most popular features. It winds down to the lakefront alongside Ebbs Creek, connecting to cliff observatories, playgrounds, picnic areas and a recreation center. Hikers and cyclists trek over varying elevations, with deer and native birds often crossing their paths. The Oak Leaf Trail is similar but stretches down to the park's 18-hole golf course and large beach. In summer, people lounge on the sand, swim in Lake Michigan's blue waters and enjoy Friday night music events. Just across a pedestrian bridge, the South Milwaukee Yacht Club offers boating docks and sailing lessons. Oak Creek flows past the club, inviting people to kayak and fish.

Homes add to the history of Grant Park
While most homes were built around the 1950s, some date back to 1870, almost 30 years before South Milwaukee gained its cityhood. Ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and bungalows are most common throughout the neighborhood. Some properties are custom or have unique historic flourishes, like Tudor-style half-timbering and stone masonry. Homes sit farther back on lots, creating ample space for shade trees, sidewalks and ornamental lawns. Prices range between $220,000 and $650,000 depending on size, age and condition. Roads are wide enough to accommodate on-street parking and two-way traffic, yet most people park in detached garages behind homes.

Beachside burgers and gourmet milkshakes
Ferch's Beachside Grille is a seasonal favorite for burgers, custard and ice-cold beer after a long day at the beach. People can walk up from the sand to the outdoor ordering window and then sit on the patio to eat and admire Lake Michigan. On the other side of the community, Better Together Café serves hot coffee and gourmet milkshakes. South Milwaukee Café serves classic diner food across the street from Walmart Supercenter. The neighborhood is less than 1 mile from downtown, which has more locally owned restaurants and diverse shops. Acetime Disc Golf is a popular stop for those who like to play on Grant Park's course.

State Route 32 touches Historic Grant Park
Lake Drive is the neighborhood's main road, offering several entrances into Grant Park. Since pedestrian and bike-friendly paths are mainly inside the park, many people prefer to drive around town. State Route 32 stretches along the other side of the community, connecting residents to public transportation and bigger cities. Homes closer to the highway experience higher noise levels, but residents find that a fair exchange for quick access. Aurora Health Center and Aurora St. Luke's South Shore Hospital are roughly equidistant from the neighborhood, and Milwaukee Micthell International Airport is about 4 miles away.
Protecting native species as a community
The Friends of Grant Park organization hosts community events at the park. Volunteers come together each spring and fall for Weed Out!, where people work together to remove invasive plant species harming native flora. Trek 'n Treat combines the fun of Halloween candy collecting with environmental education. Nearly 250 kids pick up treats from nature stations on the Seven Bridges Trail and learn about local habitats, animals and wildflowers. In June and July, the organization holds a traveling beer garden and an art fair at the park's picnic shelter.
