Historic Lakeview preserves older homes next to Downtown South Milwaukee
The Historic Lakeview neighborhood has been a part of South Milwaukee since its village days in the Oak Creek Settlement. Dating back to the 1840s, it has seen the ebb and flow of the city's industries, the growth of downtown and the rise of home development. The neighborhood remained residential throughout the city's history, preserving a large amount of historic architecture within its borders even as new developments came in. Homeowners live between the bustle of downtown's main road and the calming atmosphere of Lake Michigan's shore, which keeps residents active and the weather moderate. "Here by the lake, we stay a little bit cooler in the summertime," says Leah Minue, president of Growing South Milwaukee. "One of the sayings around town is actually 'Cooler By The Lake,' whether that's temperature-wise or us just saying we're cool."

Boating and fishing along Lake Michigan and Oak Creek
Historic Lakeview earns its name for the views of Lake Michigan, just to its east. People join the South Milwaukee Yacht Club or visit Grant Park Beach to spend the day boating, fishing and swimming. The rest of Grant Park's 381 acres offer an 18-hole golf course, wooded trails, sports fields and cliffside observation points. Oak Creek separates Historic Lakeview from Grant Park but presents even more recreational opportunities. People hike and bike along Oak Creek Parkway or cast a line in the water. "When the salmon and trout are running, people are always down there," Minue says. The creek connects to the South Milwaukee Lagoon and Mill Pond, which used to be a popular ice-skating hub in the 1980s. "Right now, our city is in this ongoing debate on what to do with the lagoon," Minue says. "A lot of people want to restore it back to the old-school ice-skating rink they remember from their childhood, and other people want to take the dam out so that fish can swim upstream the way that they should." Until a decision is made, people continue to visit the lagoon to fish and watch the sunset behind the dam's bubbling waterfall.

Prices range between $150,000 and $325,000 depending on size and condition. A pocket of new construction of contemporary homes range between $475,000 and $625,000. Front yards are small, but front porches and fenced-in backyards give homeowners some extra space outside.
